There is an advanced screening on 2/29. Does not seem to be eligible for A-List though.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Onward (2020, D: Scanlon) V: Pratt, Holland, Louis-Dreyfus, Spencer

This movie proved, to me at least, that Pixar does its best work when they're introducing brand-new worlds and concepts. Onward, on paper, sounds like it wouldn't work: Two elves try to rescue their father who is a walking pair of pants. But reducing any of their movies to a one-liner makes them all seem odd and confusing. It's how they unfold this that works and this is such a great mashup of high and low fantasy tropes (pulled from board and card games, books, video games, movies) that it feels like the freshest thing they've done in ages. It's classic Pixar: it's funny, it tugs at the heartstrings, it gives you a real sense of wonder. This is only their third good original film in seven years, so it would be sad for audiences not to come see it and have the studio make Cars 8 and Toy Story 11.

Go see it.

Now I really can't wait. You exactly described the reason I love Pixar. The premise always seems weird. A lost fish? A cooking rat? An old guy and a house? But the way they pull it off is pure magic.

I do take exception to the jab at the Toy Story sequels because they have all been great, especially the last one. In that series they surprise by making you wonder how can they make yet another Toy Story movie, but they do and it's spectacular.

I play the online Simpson's game Tapped Out and it just had a small pop-up mentioning the short.

I saw a preview clip of this at Disneyland last week; it was basically just he opening scenes plus a trailer. I'm generally not a fan of family-orientated animation, but I liked what I saw and will be seeing this in the theaters with the family (I must admit that the references to tabletop RPGs sold me on the film).

I'll check this out tonight. Not many seats sold for the screening.

I was over on one of the streaming sites, and there was a knock-off available called "Homeward", with the voices of Joey Lawrence and Tom Green.

I have a "hunch" this is going to be a box office bomb for Pixar due to the coronavirus panic (along with the rest of March's releases).

Re: Disney/Pixar's Onward (2020, D: Scanlon) V: Pratt, Holland, Louis-Dreyfus, Spencer

I saw this last night. Overall it was pretty good. I think people may think a bit less of it because it is a Pixar movie and that comes with big expectations. It's a pretty basic story and execution. But it is still nice to see an original movie from them.

The final act is great and tugs are the heart strings.

Yeah, I definitely thought the destination was better than the journey. The ending made me wish the rest of the movie was as good.

I know Pixar isn't known for their trailers but there's nothing about the trailers that makes me want to see it. Even the off-the-charts tomato score can't seem to sway me.

Seems like a future rental.

Saw it with the family yesterday. As expected it tugs on you emotional heart strings, which left my wife a little teary. If you're a fan of tabletop RPGs you'll love, and it even features an appearance from a classic Dungeons & Dragons monster that I never imagined seeing in a Disney movie.

Theater was about 3/4 empty on a Saturday afternoon. Normally a movie like this would be sold out.

That's about $1m higher than Good Dinosaur and $12m lower than Coco.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Normally I'm all excited to see Pixar flicks, but this one doesn't do anything for me. I think it's the main character design. They're just not appealing to me.

This one is a "wait for it on Disney+" for me. I wonder how many other people feel the same. Disney may have to get used to some people now waiting for certain movies on D+.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Onward (2020, D: Scanlon) V: Pratt, Holland, Louis-Dreyfus, Spencer

I know many families that will not be taking their kids to Onward and maybe other Disney movies.

My kids are in their mid-20's now, but since I have a grandkid coming soon...I will not be taking him to any Disney movies in the future.

When I was kid and when my kids were young, we NEVER had to worry about anything from Disney. Now, Disney is sliding in "Social Training" in into our kids, no thanks Disney, my family will taking of training our kids...we do not need you help.

I own every Pixar movie and LOVE them all...Onward is were it comes to an End.

What the heck are you talking about? The movies main theme is about the importance of familial bonds -- not sure how that is nefarious social programming.

Yeah that post was insane. No big social messaging here, just a cute little story of the strength of family.
Edit : Apparently there was Disney's first openly gay character and I guess Iron Giant is homophobic. I actually didn't even know that there was a gay character, not that I would care. Was it the female cop who questioned the kids in disguise?

Yeah, it was the one female police officer. Basically a blink and you miss it line. For all we know there may not be any male Cyclops, I do not know how Cylops reproduce.
Spoiler:
When the disguised kids starts talking about not understanding his girlfriends kids, she replies that her girlfriend has kids as well. It's why she lets them go.
