But were any of them very scary? Part 1 has its moments but it also has some laughably bad moments as well.
All the rest were basically jokes and I never really considered any of the Nightmare movies scary. I love them but none have really ever scared me. And I was a child/teen of the 80's so I saw them young.

I’ve never understood the “Englund is too old for Freddy” comments over the years. There’s so much makeup over his face age doesn’t matter and it’s not like Freddy is this incredibly action oriented character. Plus Englund hasn’t gained much weight over the years to make his Freddy look off.
I’d like to see them set a new movie in the 80s with a new group of 80s teens. Of course, I’m not sure how Langenkamp would fit in that unless she was playing a different character.
I’d prefer NOT to see another meta NoES.

this is so unnecessary. reboot or nothing else. we saw them in New Nightmare and that was it. be done with those characters and move with something fresh, unlike the last boring reboot effort...

They should bring back Freddy's Nightmare's tv series.
The original had a lot of potential but was made on the cheap which was probably it's downfall.
What about another Friday the 13th tv series? Is that all but dead?

I haven't been following the Box Office lately and just checked wikipedia. Halloween made $189 Million on $15 million budget. Wow.
No wonder Langenkamp's comments is a news story.

When I saw them in their entirety on DVD as an adult, I thought they held up pretty well.
The Dream Master and the two after that were gore-fests but not scary, creepy, or atmospheric. Freddy came off more like a comedian with the constant one-liners.
I saw New Nightmare, and felt like it was trying to be scary, but wasn't actually scary.
They tried to make it like it was in the real world, but they picked the most recognizable kid actors to play Heather Langekamp's son. The kid from Pet Sematary and Kindergarden Cop.
Bad acting too, especially in Julie's death scene.
I don't know if that's the line, but after 30 years and making guest appearances on a family sitcom, I think it's safe to say that Freddy has lost a little bit of his edge.
The only rap song I knew of for that movie was The Fat Boys "Ready for Freddie." It was either featured in the movie or on the soundtrack.
But yeah, the decline started with The Dream Master. think Freddy's Dead had Roseanne and Tom Arnold.
The first reboot with Rob Zombie made $$$.
The sequel didn't do too good.
Then this latest remake/sequel/reboot makes $$$ once again.
However, New Line tried to imitate the success of Rob Zombie's Halloween reboot with their own Freddy and Jason reboots and those tanked.
Maybe second time's the charm?
I remember watching that show as a kid and being terrified.
The one where the guy likes to gamble and is having an affair on his wife...what happened in the ending was pretty disturbing.
I got to see the cannibal episode not too long ago...not quite as good as a I remember. Really cheesy, and awful effects.
I would still like to have that series on DVD.

I think Jackie Earle Haley did the best he could with what he had to work with. He could have been a decent Freddy, but between the more realistic burn victim look and the over reliance on CG as well as the film not being good his performance gets over shadowed.

A Nightmare on Elm Street helped solidify actress Heather Langenkamp as a seminal figure in horror, with her Nancy Thompson becoming one of the slasher subgenre's most memorable heroes. The actress went on to reprise her role for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and New Nightmare, with Langenkamp's Nancy being just as important to the franchise as Robert Englund's Freddy Krueger. I don't see enough great storylines that would incorporate Nancy in any universe. I just don't know if that exists, but some brilliant person might be working on something. But I know the fans would love it so much, because I see them in these situations where they're so enthusiastic."
She added, "They're such great fans that the horror genre just doesn't seem to appreciate them enough. I constantly walk away with, these are people who have created a genre just out of pure love over the past 30 years. Their love of these movies has actually buoyed this genre in a way that no other genres, I think, can say that's the reason why they're so successful. And so, for their sake, I think, give them what they want. If this is what they want, they're telling me they want it, then why wouldn't you give people what they want?"

As much as I’d be down for it I do think she has a point about finding a way that makes sense to incorporate Nancy once more. It might come off as forced and being done only because of the success of 2018’s Halloween.

I just wish someone could figure out a good way to reboot this franchise, Nancy or not. The only cast I care to see return is Englund, and if he came back for one more with the right script it could be just as big as "Halloween".

I'd love to see another Elm Street film and have Heather back, but I think this would be a harder sell to a studio than Curtis was. For one, Heather simply isn't as big of a star as Curtis. And two, outside of the horror fanbase I don't think as many casual fans associate the franchise with Nancy the same way they do for Laurie Strode and Halloween. I think because they passed the baton from Nancy to Kristen to Alice as female leads so effortlessly, where the original Halloween run mainly focused of Laurie and her daughter Jamie, so the connection stayed a bit stronger even after Jamie Lee Curtis was 'gone'... they even showed her photo in Halloween 4.

Yeah, Nancy was just one of many targets for Freddy to go after. She was a pain in his side but she was never necessarily his sole focus.
A character like Laurie is different because whether or not you like the sibling element that gave him a motive to go after her and in turn Jamie later. Granted the 2018 film broke that element, but I think a lot of the investment people had in seeing her back again was largely due to her seeming synonymous with Michael.

I'm also a fan of Dream Warriors,that and no 1 are my fav
4 onwards are way too campy and jokey (powerglove being the very worst)
they need to bring back the slasher/horror element, but can use today's FX to make some kick ass scary dreamworlds
Just feed Englund a heap of viagra and adrenaline, that will get him through the shoots
Would also love to see Johnny depp reprise his role

There was a time when Robert Englund was pretty adamant about never playing Freddy Krueger again, but he has more recently suggested that he may have one more left in him. Englund actually did reprise the role for a special appearance on last year’s Halloween episode of “The Goldbergs,” but will we ever see him back under the makeup for one final movie?
At NJ’s Monster Mania con over the weekend, Englund again suggested that he could probably do it one more time. And he offered up his thoughts on who should play Freddy next.
“We need a Freddy that can do the next eight movies – or seven, I don’t want them to remake Part 1 again,” Englund told the crowd during his Monster Mania panel. “I’m not Freddy anymore, you guys. I could do one more…probably. If you shot me up with vitamin c. But here’s the thing. I can’t do eight more, you guys. So we need a new actor that you guys believe in and trust and love that can go the distance.”
Englund continued, “He’s not a kid anymore either but the rumor I’ve heard that I like is Kevin Bacon. Kevin loves horror. He’s a real actor. He’s a character actor. Kevin was great in Tremors. Kevin was great in Stir of Echoes. And I’ve heard this rumor. We need someone like that to take it on. And re-do it, exploiting all of the new technology.”
Bacon, as you may recall, did at least lightly suggest an interest in playing Freddy back in 2016. “I like the way you think,” Bacon replied to a fan who suggested him for the role.

I can’t say I disagree with him. As much as Englund is Freddy if the franchise gets rebooted again it likely wouldn’t just be a one off film (unless for some reason it would be a dud). Unless a perfect replacement for Englund was found where he could be replaced fairly seamlessly.
