I had a huge soft spot for an animated movie called Starchaser: The Legend of Orin when I was a kid. Had some blood and death - kind of a grown up Star Wars, complete with a Millenium Falcon stand-in and a sword that has an invisible blade.

I made a friend of mine watch it with me just after college and holy Hannah, is that a boring piece of shit with shoddy animation.

Robin, I don't understand the comment about DeVito. How can he be "good" if you don't like his portrayal of the character?
Because I thought that DeVito did a great job in the role. However I didn't like Burton's idea that the Penguin should be a mutant freak who bites noses and eats fish complete with scales. At the same point, DeVito does it so well that it's hard to fault his acting in the role.

It's ok as long as you SAY that Dangerous Liaisons is your favorite movie.

Revisited Braveheart after 20 years in 2016. Holy crap, what was I thinking when I first saw it in 1996.
That was a painful 3 hours.

That movie is full of awesome battle scenes mixed with ridiculous non-battle scenes.

Braveheart is still amazing to me, I watch it at least once a year. I'm still waiting for a local revival theater to show it on the big screen since I was too young to see it in theaters in 1995.

You'd be too busy laughing at the comedy relief in that scene to notice I suppose. I totally forgot about that.

I saw that movie in the theater, IN 3-D!!!! Even at 6 years of age I could tell it was a Star Wars rip-off.

I saw the Phantom Menace in London when it was first released and thought upon first viewing that this could be the biggest movie of all time. Bigger than Titanic.. Saw it a second time in theaters when I got home and Jar Jar ruined it for me forevermore.

It was a pretty groundbreaking film. A grown-up fantasy story with a fascinating world, starring characters created by some of the best puppet makers of all time - and zero humans for them to interact with.

Even though I think the movie is pretty slow and plodding these days, that doesn't diminish what a big deal it was.

Dumb and Dumber is unwatchable to me now after loving it when it came out.

That's another one I still enjoy

My wife and I say the "Goodbye my LOVE!" line to each other constantly. I can't see "soup du jour" on a menu without commenting and "Samsonite! I was way off" is said any time I see the luggage

The Dark Crystal has a perfunctory story, but the visuals are amazing. It’s like no other film ever made.

What’s not to like about Dumb and Dumber? (Actually, the dvd has an extended cut that really does hurt the film. Avoid that.)

Just reading those quotes made me chuckle. Probably my favourite comedy ever.

That's probably true, though, I mean all that you have left is basically Qui Gon and Obi Won in the opening scene taking on the trade federation, and then at the end against Darth Maul. Those are like the best parts of the movie, and what I imagined we'd get in the prequels.

Re: What the hell was I thinking? (movies you thought you liked)

I used to love watching Abbott & Costello movies when they ran on Sunday mornings on a local TV station. Right up through college, I watched them regularly.

35 years later I buy a DVD box set, "The Best of Abbott & Costello Vol. 1," containing their first eight movies, all of which I considered among their best. I tried watching a few of them and they were just deadly. The humor was mean-spirited, the supporting characters were dull, the screenplays were hackneyed, and not every musical number was as good as I remembered. The only one I watched all the way through was HOLD THAT GHOST (1941).

I've been trying to get my kids to sit down with me and watch the Dark Crystal simply because I loved it as a kid and want to see if it still holds up. I'm starting to worry that most of my love for many 80's movies is simply nostalgia.

Dumb and Dumber is the one goofy 90's comedy that I still absolutely love. Everything else is basically unwatchable at this point. Especially any of the Sandler comedies. They're just awful.

I was someone that hated The Phantom Menace the first time I saw it. I was at a pre-screening with a neighbor that worked for Kenner at the time. I felt guilty I didn't like it and even tried to cover up my pure disappointment on the car ride home. However, I made myself watch it over and over again and even tried to enjoy AOTC as much as I could. By the time ROTS came out I was sick to my stomach about what had become of Star Wars. I've still only seen the last two prequels twice each.

Pretty much this... I've given several 80's and early 90's favorites a shot recently and came away disappointed. The latest was "Can't Buy Me Love". I must've seen that movie 10 times as a kid... now it's ridiculous.

Yeah, don't do that. I don't have kids myself, but I was one once, and I know that the kiddie stuff my parents liked did not work for me. Broke my mom's heart when I couldn't stand more than 5 minutes of Howdy Doody (when I was a kid, a local channel started showing reruns of it).

Then again, I love 40s era Warner Bros. cartoons. Half of my knowledge of WWII comes from those. Just the other day I was talking about Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody, and finally said, "You know, like in Rhapsody Rabbit". Everyone then knew what song I meant.
