Arachnophobia - remake (P: Wan, D: Landon)

EXCLUSIVE: Amblin and James Wan’s Atomic Monster are the early stages of a remake of Arachnophobia, the 1990 Frank Marshall-directed horror-comedy film about a species of South American killer spider that crosses the U.S. border in a coffin. It breeds and becomes a massive killer. Jeff Daniels and John Goodman starred in the original, in which a few brave souls try to track down the queen before the hybrid breed can take hold.

Wan, who most recently completed Aquaman for DC and Warner Bros, won’t direct this. He’ll guide it as producer. Atomic Monster is in post-production on the latest in The Conjuring universe, The Nun, which is slated to hit theaters September 7.

Wan is repped by Paradigm, Stacey Testro International, and attorney David Fox.

They’ll set a writer shortly.

No need for this. Why doesn't he go remake Anaconda instead.

No way this will ever be as enjoyable as Marshall's.

The dearth of originality just grows and grows. So disheartening. I literally cringe now at all these reboot/remake/whatever threads. Ill read and may respond, but it’s just out of hand...

With the huge amount movies and tv shows that come out each year nowadays there aren’t enough good writers or original ideas left.

There’s plenty of good writers and originality left. But studios continue to use the same handful of hacks to continue to shovel out their shit.

254 movies were released in theaters in 1988. There were 738+ last year.

Somebody has to write the fillers between the top 20 and #738.

You'll also be happy to know that #738, 2:22, grossed $422 during its run with a 22% rottentomatoes percentage.

Christopher Landon ain’t afraid of no spiders.

Landon, the writer-director behind horror hits Happy Death Day and Freaky, has been tapped to write and direct Amblin Partner’s remake of Arachnophobia.

James Wan and his Atomic Monster cohort Michael Clear are producing the feature project along with Amblin, while Frank Marshall, the Jurassic World franchise producer who made his directorial debut with the 1990 movie, will exec produce.

A horror comedy, Arachnophobia centered on a small town terrorized by a colony of deadly South American spiders accidentally brought into the U.S. Jeff Daniels starred as a doctor who moves his family from the big city for the calm bucolic small-town life with John Goodman playing a know-it-all exterminator. Julian Sands and Harley Jane Kozak were also in the cast.

Amblin’s president of production, Jeb Brody, will oversee the project for the studio, along with exec vp Lauren Abrahams and senior vp Mia Maniscalco.

Atomic Monster’s next has an adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, starring Lewis Pullman and directed by Gary Dauberman, hitting theatres Sept. 9, while Wan’s next directorial effort is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which opens March 17, 2023.

Landon has shown an affinity for balancing scares and laughs to popular effect. His most recent movie was 2020’s Freaky, the well-reviewed body-switching slasher movie that starred Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton. And he was behind Blumhouse horror hits Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U, which earned praise for its inventive Groundhog Day-meets-Scream premise.

Landon earned his horror bonafide, writing three Paranormal Activity movies and writing and directing Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.

He is repped by WME, Mosaic and Goodman Genow.

Well, as with most remakes my reaction is: Hopefully this will get us a 4k release of the original.
