General Lee? Do you want the movie to be boycotted?

Yeah, that crossed my mind, but isn't it generally considered to be grandfathered in/accepted as pop culture?

I'd rank this as bottom 5 Spielberg. An interesting concept with a paint by numbers dud of a script and pedestrian direction from Spielberg.. The "real world" felt like it had less consequence than when you die in the Oasis and all that happens is you lose all your video game coins. The cast was the highlight. Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn and Mark Rylance are 4 of the most interesting actors working today. I just wish they had more to work with. The Where's Waldo effect of trying to spot pop culture characters was fun. I'm pretty sure I spotted Robocop near the beginning of the film. Anyhow, here's hoping Indy 5 is better.

2.5/5

Completely different characters and story. It’s Willy Wonka meets Tron/The Matrix meets Elysium. It more or less delivered the goods both visually and also as a mystery of sorts with the keys and such. It’s ambitious if nothing else.

Actually I had a HUGE problem with that. The book makes clear that Adventure is so obvious a clue by being the first video game Easter Egg that IROK is mocked for thinking he found the sequel to the game all by himself. Every single Gunter has scrutinized every line of code in that game.
That a room full of IOI oologists could look at an Atari 2600 console and not immediately jump to the Easter egg in Adventure is totally unbelievable even in the context of pure fantasy. That was the one time that the movie really felt dumbed-down for mainstream audiences and it disappointed me.
On the other hand, the Overlook completely blew my mind. That was the absolute pinnacle for me.

Okay. Gotcha. Thanks for explaining. Sorry for calling you a dick.

True. I had forgot about that bit. It's definitely more of a 'casual viewer' plot point.

The end of that sequence was hilarious though with all the Sixers dying/getting spit out of the Oasis.
I thought The Shining and the other horror references felt horribly out of place ... or like they were a remnant of a cut part of the book.

They explain that Halliday and Kyra (I forgot her real name) went to see The Shining on their only date. During that, they casually drop that it is his “eleventh favorite horror film”. It seems as if him being a horror fan was something that may have played better in the book, but was shaved for film and doesn’t fit quite right.

Did anyone else think that the IRL scenes looked cheap? I'm thinking about stuff like driving around in the streets in Columbus or in the Stacks (aside from the cool opening shot). I'm wondering if it was supposed to look like a throwback to cheap 80's movies.

Agreed. I'm planning to see it again.

I don't think I'll have nearly as much fun with Infinity War.

^^^ I wonder that too. I had to have had a goofy smile on my face practically the whole screening. Not saying it’s a masterpiecee, but any of its flaws it had were pretty forgivable considering how much I was entertained.

A 5.2 m Monday and a $5.3m Tuesday gross bodes well for the film. I think it can coexist with A Quiet Place in its 2nd weekend.

4 out of 5. Deviated from the book but worked just fine on its own. The Shining sequence was brilliant. And Olivia Cooke is sick hot.

No Rush 2112 save for a poster

No Tomb of Horrors save for an image on Aech's van

Olivia Cooke was Phantom of the Opera levels of being a disgustingly hideous deformed beast with that ... birthmark?

To be fair, in the novel she was also a fattie.

Nope she wasn't. Just a birthmark and otherwise looked like her avatar.

Wrong. She was a fattie. Well, chubby I suppose is the right word.

I remember her being described as a normal size/weight girl and her only oddity so to speak was the birthmark.

Re: Ready Player One (Spielberg, 2018) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Taken from the Ready Player One Wiki :

Art3mis

Appearance

In the book, Wade describes Art3mis' avatar as raven-haired and beautiful. She has a pretty face: hazel eyes, a pointy chin, rounded cheekbones, and a perpetual smirk. He also adds that her features look realistic, in comparison to the other avatars, as if her actual face had been scanned into OASIS as a skin. He has also referred to her avatar's body as "unusual."

In the film, the hair of Art3mis's avatar is pink instead of black.

After finding her file in the IOI (Innovative Online Industries) database, Wade discovers that Art3mis looks identical to her OASIS avatar with the exception of a birthmark, a port-wine stain on the left side of her face which she attempts to cover with her hair.

The file also mentions that she is 5'7" and 168 lbs.

Olivia Cooke isn't fat, though. She's also 5'5.

Saw it last night. Have read the book twice. Was surprised at how different the movie was from the book. Not only things left out (usual with a book>movie) but that almost everything was changed. From who goes to IOI headquarters, to challenges, to the way Og is used. I liked it, but it was almost like the premise was used, and the pop culture and everything else was changed.

That's pretty thick. And just the way I like 'em

Certainly nowhere near Olivia Cooke, who looked to be about 110 soaking wet.

I haven't read the book, so I don't have the point of reference. I really liked this one, much more that I expected. I'm sure the nostalgia played a lot to me liking it, but I thought it was well put together.

I'm curious if younger audiences like this.
