Is this a prequel to Unfriended?

This looks terrible but I gotta admit that Unfriended was actually pretty decent. It's probably the only movie that actually works well if you watch it on a laptop or tablet.

My teenage daughter and I saw this trailer last weekend. She thought it looked decent. I told her it might be the worst movie ever made.

I saw this today. Used my brand new Movie Pass card.
Anyways, I liked it a little more than Unfriended from a few years ago. Although that movie had a unique perspective being filmed from the perspective of a computer screen. This one had some pretty creepy scenes and a few jump moments. But, I thought the ending was kind of contrived. They wanted it to have some kind of ironic ending and I thought that fell flat. I have to admit it was kind of interesting that they somehow made a watchable horror movie about self absorbed social media behavior.
I read that this movie was actually shot 3 years ago and was already released overseas last year. So it was sitting in the can for awhile. Also saw on IMDB this was a German produced movie and filmed in South Africa, which substituted for California.
If the name of the lead doesn't sound familiar, she plays the daughter on Fear the Walking Dead on AMC. She also had a pretty big part on The 100 on The CW.

FYI for those who passed on seeing this in the theater or buying/renting the BD/digital copy, it's on Netflix as of today.
