Chasing the Dragon (2017) -- S: Donnie Yen, Andy Lau

Donnie Yen stars as infamous real-life drug kingpin Crippled Ho, who came to Hong Kong an illegal immigrant in 1963 and ruthlessly carved an empire from the chaotic underworld of drug dealers and corrupt police that ruled the city under notorious detective Lee Rock (Andy Lau).

Opens September 29th here in the States.

Love that poster artwork.

With Wong Jing (co-)directing, I'll approach with caution, even with these two top stars involved.

Andy Lau played Lee Rock in two extremely popular, eponymously-titled, back-to-back movies in 1991, probably the last era when you could still shoot a movie set in 1970's Hong Kong IN Hong Kong. Earlier that same year, Ray Lui played Crippled Ho in To Be Number One, which was also a big boxoffice hit and won Best Picture at the HKFA's that year. All three of them are epic exercises in turd-polishing in my opinion -- there were many others produced around the same period -- but I suspect this flashy new "retro" show won't hold a candle to them. I am curious to see just how much of it was actually shot in Hong Kong! I see a lot of vintage stock footage in that trailer, plus quite a few green-screen shots, and the large Hong Kong street set looks suspiciously like a redressed version of that 'Old Shanghai' street set used in almost every mainland period flick from the past decade.

That song in the trailer is WAY too on-the-nose. I can just see Wong Jing ordering that.

So did anyone see this? Came out last year and just released on blu last month. Based on how big this thread is, I’ll assume it wasn’t all that great. Either way, I’m picking this up.
