a trend I've noticed in recent comedies.

someone will bring up a past personal experience and will describe in detail, but what they are describing will be some sort of movie or pop culture reference.

I.E someone will say "you know what I wasn't afraid, I grabbed that golden relic and when that huge giant bolder was rolling towards me I ran like my life depended on it and all I had was my whip and my lucky fedora, and I survived, and you guys can survive this" Then someone will say "I'm pretty sure thats the plot to Raiders of the Lost Ark".

I can't recall all the specific times this joke has been made, but I know I've seen it what feels like quite a few times.

They did it with "The Notebook" in Blockers.

Vince Vaughn did it with "Flash Dance" in The Internship.

Can anyone else cite this joke or a variation of it in a movie?

From Scrooged

Frank: Check the records. I did some stuff. I played baseball. One year, I hit the home-run that won the big game—

Ghost of Christmas Past: That was the kid on The Courtship of Eddie's Father.

Frank: There was another time, though. I was on a hill covered with flowers, and there was a beautiful girl with pigtails—

Ghost of Christmas Past: Pathetic! You are so pathetic! That was Little House on the Prairie!

Frank: Was it the the homecoming episode?

Ghost of Christmas Past: Yes, it was the homecoming episode of Little House.

I was going to say Scrogged as well. Of course in that movie it made perfect sense since the guy was a tv obsessed television executive.

I know this is off topic because it's not a movie, but this is basically the basis of Keenan's "scared straight" convict character Lorenzo Mckintosh on SNL, ie:

Another example was in Office Space where a character comes-up with the scheme of shaving-off fractions of a cent off thousands of accounts and putting it in a separate account. The other guy replies "Yeah, they did that in Superman III"

I’ve seen this as well. I can’t think of any movie I’ve seen it in but I thought of an episode of Big Bang Theory where Sheldon describes a hypothetical letter that Howard’s dad wrote to him as a kid only to have Raj call him out as describing the plot to The Goonies.

I'm pretty sure The Simpsons did it in an early season. "Homer, that was Happy Days!"

Something I watched recently had that trope. I cant recall specifically, but I want to say Jumanji.

Not a comedy, but when Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War was talking about that “old movie” Empire Strikes Back when taking down Ant-Man.

My first thought when I saw the thread title.
