The animation team actually knows how to handle DC properties so I’m glad they’re not interlinked.

The DC animated films have been more miss than hit for me in the last few years and the first few screen shots of death of superman don't have me hopeful.

I don’t think all the animated films are great but most are at least decent. I like more of them than I dislike.

Screw Phoenix.

After his success in "The Room" and the "The Disaster Artist," Tommy Wiseau has been publicly campaigning for one of the most iconic roles in the history of film: Batman's eternal nemesis, The Joker. As huge fans, we at Nerdist give him a chance to show the world what he can bring to this legendary role!

Wiseau could play the Joker, OD and then James Franco could play him in a film about his Joker performance. Franco would then win the Oscar.

The Batgirl subplot in the original was also problematic.

Imagine if they put out a batgirl film just to fridge her in this one. Outrage a plenty.

You mean Tommy Wiseau's entire career? Yes, it's a joke. And yes, it sucks.

Phoenix gives a bit thought about playing JOKER.

You know, I wonder if this doesn't premiere on DC's new digital platform. It would be a good way to get more subscribers.

EXCLUSIVE: Character Details for the Joaquin Phoenix ‘JOKER’ Film

There are several listed, but this one is notable:

MURRAY FRANKLIN
Male (65-75) Caucasian

While no further description was given to us about this character, we are told the role is a very strong supporting one and that Phillips, along with co-producer Martin Scorsese, may be targeting Hollywood legend Robert DeNiro for the role. Scorsese and DeNiro have been frequent collaborators since 1973’s Mean Streets, with iconic films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino on their shared resumes.

Sounds like a decent idea, I'm game. While DC's live action offerings have been floppers (for the most part), their animated stuff has been on point.

re: Joker (2019, D: Todd Phillips) -- S: Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix's Joker Origin Movie a Go at Warner Bros.

The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as the arch-nemesis of Batman and shooting will begin September in New York.

Todd Phillips is directing and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Scott Silver co-wrote the script.

The studio hasn’t staked out a release date for the movie, which goes against the grain of most comic book movies that plant flags years in advance. But the Joker standalone movie is meant to be different from other comic book super hero movies.

The budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the tentpoles that dominate the form. And the standalone is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content (at least as experimental as a studio can be with established brands such as DC), which is described as being akin to a crime drama.

That said, there is a chance that the movie could be ready for a release as early as late 2019, depending on various factors.

well, Phoenix is on my good side. You Were Never Really Here is one of the best films of the year so far. Here's hoping the solo Joker film rocks, as well.

And expect to see Phoenix (and maybe Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese) at SDCC. Maybe they can debut some concept art for the Joker's look, after which will fuel the debate on how wrong he looks.

I can’t imagine he’ll look any worse than Leto’s Joker. At least I hope they aren’t stupid enough to go with something that ridiculous again.

I hope he keeps the beard from YWNRH -- he looks evil with it.

Comic book movies don't generally get me excited, but this one does. Phoenix playing the role. I think he could knock it out of the park. Plus as a stand alone, its not gonna be a cog in the DCEU, I like that. And with Scorsese signed on as producer...I have high hopes for this.

We already had thug Joker, don’t need hipster Joker next. I really hope they just stick to basics in terms of his look. Nothing weird to set him apart from other versions. Just a good performance.

Exclusive: Joaquin Phoenix on His “Unique” Joker Movie and Why It Scares Him

http://collider.com/joaquin-phoenix-...movie-details/

Fairly long interview but some interesting quotes from Phoenix.

One excerpt stood out:

“Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said ‘Why don’t they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?’ And I thought, ‘You can’t do the Joker, because, you know, it’s just you can’t do that character, it’s just been done.’ So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said ‘I’ll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros.’ And I said ‘I’m not gonna go, I can’t go to a general meeting.’ So I completely forgot about it, and so then I heard about this idea, I was like, ‘Oh that’s so exciting, that’s the kind of experience I wanted to have, with a movie based on a comic character.’ I felt like you could get something on screen.”

So this finally gets the greenlight, but another version with Leto as Joker is also in development.

I can't see 2 Joker movies co-existing. I think the Leto version dies in development.

The Leto one isn't happening, and I wonder how much "in development" really is. Thinking Warner did this to try and keep him happy while they decide what to do with his version of the character.

It was reported in June by Variety.

No writer and No director attached. So that's why his version looks very unlikely to happen.
