'Black Adam': Pierce Brosnan to Play DC Hero Dr. Fate Opposite Dwayne Johnson (Exclusive)
MARCH 24, 2021 2:50PM by Borys Kit
Tomorrow will never die now that the Justice Society is complete in New Line's DC superhero movie.
The name is Fate. Dr. Fate.
In the first superhero foray of his career, Pierce Brosnan has nabbed the plum role of classic hero Dr. Fate opposite Dwayne Johnson in Black Adam, New Line's action-adventure project featuring the DC Comics antihero.
Brosnan, known for being one of only a handful of actors to inhabit the James Bond mantle, is the last key member of the roll call for the production that will feature the big-screen debut of the Justice Society, DC’s precursor to the Justice League that takes a familial and multi-generational approach to heroics. Already suited up are Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.
Black Adam is the second New Line/DC film following 2019’s critical and commercial hit Shazam! with the two characters, Shazam and Black Adam, being arch rivals in the DC Universe. The project is headed towards an April start of production in Atlanta.
Plot details are being kept shrouded behind a veil of secrecy as are character details for Marwan Kenzari, the Aladdin and The Old Guard actor who is also in the cast.
Brosnan will play Kent Nelson, aka the good Dr. Fate, a son of an archeologist who was taught sorcery skills and given the magical Helmet of Fate. The character, created by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman, is one of DC’s oldest characters, having first appeared in 1940’s More Fun Comics #5.
Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed Johnson opposite Emily Blunt in Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise, is directing Black Adam. Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions are producing with Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. The project reunites the team behind Jungle Cruise, which is currently set to open July 30, 2021.
FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon is serving as executive producer. Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani wrote the latest draft with Adam Sztykiel writing the previous draft.
Brosnan is the veteran actor with dozens of credits, although he may be best known globally for his suave and sophisticated take on James Bond in the 007 movies in the 1990s and early 2000s which grossed almost $1.5 billion.
He also starred in the hit remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, the first studio project under his Irish DreamTime production banner, as well as the blockbuster Mamma Mia! films, and the critically acclaimed thrillers The Matador and The Ghost Writer.
The actor and environmentalist- philanthropist was most recently seen in Netflix’s comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga alongside Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, and next appears in the musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale Cinderella releasing this July.
Brosnan is repped by CAA, Curtis Brown, and Hansen, Jacobson.

Awesome casting choice and Dr. Fate rules! And before the MCU fanboys come in and say that Dr. Fate is a rip-off from Strange - Dr. Fate made his debut in 1940. Dr. Strange made his debut in 1963. FYI

VERY cool choice for Fate, who’s always been one of my favourites. Quite excited about this movie as it seems to be turning into a JSA movie as well.

Should have been Oded Fehr
But honestly this is a pretty good choice.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised that they didn't go with a person of Middle Eastern descent, because if I recall correctly, most of the recent comics have had the helmet used by someone of that background. But not mad, because Brosnan is awesome.

At least we're not getting Zero Hour Dr. Fate.

Pierce Brosnan is awsome. I'm a fan of his ever since I watched Remington Steele as a kid and I'm happy to see him re-introduced to a younger audience. It's probably like Michael Douglas in Ant-Man, which was a great casting choice too.

Oh I know. "Fate Classic" haha. I just know the movies have also pulled more from the New 52, so that's why I was a little surprised. And good point, there could be a "passing of the mantle".

Ya know...this might be right behind Batman as my most anticipated DC film. I don't know anything about Justice Society but If they really are attempting some world building here for potential future films, could be good - and has the best potential to carry on the DECU. (sorry Flashpoint) If they can get Cavil in, that'd be awesome!

Love me some Brosnan. In everything. From Bond to Mrs. Doubtfirefire to Thomas Crown and Ghost Writer, fucking Seraphim Falls. Love him! I guess that’s the nail in coffin of Justice League. Oh well.

Principal photography with DJ has wrapped.
This is his usual thank you speech to the crew.
I saw he's now flying off to promote Jungle Cruise. He may be asked to come back later for re-shoots.

Yes, if bullets bounce off the flying guy who shoots lightning from his hands, definitely stand there and keep on shooting.
