The argument can be made that its not the best Batman movie(that would be Mask of the Phantasm) but as a film by itself its great. Just like Nolan made a heist film with Batman in it alas "Heat" Burton made a Noir monster fantasy film with Batman in it. In both instances the Directors went all in with their vision and it feels like cohesive world where these characters exist without feeling contrived
Yep, Returns is my favorite as well. Forever and Batman & Robin were terrible IMO.

I never minded Batman Forever. It's fine for what it is.

Yup, Tim Burton's love letter to German Expressionism.

Batman Returns has a ton of problems, including the dialogue. I still say Batman is the best movie of the four.

Yeah "Forever" and "Batman and Robin" are pretty close in tone and script. So to say one is wayy better than the other is strange to me. And between the two I will take "Batman and Robin" because at least that one embraces its campiness which makes for a more fun experience alas

I'd throw Drew Barrymore into that vat of crap the Joker went into in Batman. I absolutely hate her and anything she's remotely tied to regarding movies.

Schumacher doesn't need to apologize for this film. I love it when I'm drinking.

Re: Joel Schumacher apologizes for 'Batman & Robin'

Outside of Catwoman, I don't like much of Batman Returns. Tim Burton thought he was making an arthouse film and started pulling in many elements that really have nothing to do with Batman as a character. It's apparent the studio had reined Burton in on Batman and with its success gave him carte blanche on the sequel.

Everyone should be very thankful he never got to make that Superman he wanted.

I only like Returns because of Catwoman too, otherwise the Penguin stuff is pretty silly. I like the style and setting of the first Batman much more, Returns just feels like Burton doing his typical dark and "kooky" shtick.

Re: Joel Schumacher apologizes for 'Batman & Robin'

How many of you have actually watched Batman Returns recently? Seriously it doesn't hold up well at all. The camp factor is in full force just as bad as Batman & Robin. The only real difference is it's under the guise of a film that has a more serious tone. The dialogue is shit and pretty much any scene with The Penguin is awful as is the character's entire plot. Catwoman's entire origin is pretty cheesy too if you really look at it. Pfeiffer is hot as hell though. The film also looks completely fake and you can tell it was shot on a soundstage.

I love Burton's Batman and Batman Returns as much as I did the day they were released. I also like Batman Forever and don't hate Batman And Robin as much as most do.

That's what I thought of it when I was a kid. Now I think it's awesome.

Anyone remember the painfully hard Batman Returns video game?

I liked Arnold as Mr. Freeze. I always looked at Batman and Robin as an intentional goof like the TV show and enjoy it on that level. it's not the Batman movie I'd make but I'm fine with it, but not those nipple suits. They need to CG those nipples off.

I think Batman Returns is a German expressionist on acid tour-de-force. Style over substance for sure, but then again, 99% of Burtons are just that.

The one for SNES? I don't remember it being that difficult at all, but it was an awesome game.

I think I would enjoy Batman Returns a little more if it was a different actor playing the Penguin. DeVito's performance is like nails on a chalkboard.

It's supposed to look like it's on a sound stage.

Supposed to or not it doesn't look great. I don't really care if Burton was trying to make a German Expressionist film or what. The first film Gotham looks like a real city and looks far superior.

The SNES game was really good, but if I remember correctly the Sega CD version was incredibly hard?

I don't think any of the films look like a real city until the Dark Knight.

I preferred the city in Batman Begins. The Gotham of The Dark Knight looks just like...Chicago.

Agreed. Honestly as much as I like the Nolan trilogy in general I wish the sequels would have been closer to Batman Begins overall as far as the look, tone, etc. I think it feels the most like a comic book film that's grounded whereas the sequels feel like crime dramas with Batman characters. They're still great but I prefer the original.

The Dark Knight looked like an American city, Batman Begins had a bit too much studio and London for my taste. My favorite on location shots in Batman Begins were actually in Chicago.
