I will watch this again next month when it comes out. I do want to see the scenes that weren't completed in the rough cut in it's final form.

To me, the monster at 1:30 looks straight out of "this doesn't look real at all" playbook of every other Licker/Nemesis/Whathaveyou from previous RE films. Based on the animation alone I know it's Resident Evil.

As a longtime fan of the games, I'm just glad this movie will have timeline accurate monsters. Hell the zombies look better than the last batch of films. Hopefully we get the real Hunter and not an oversized Licker.

I'm optimistic. Reminding me of how great the Silent Hill adaptation is. The November release means marketing is pretty confident. I guess we'll see in a few weeks.

I saw someone on Twitter is going to a screening tonight, but can't post impressions until the embargo is lifted. Hoping to hear something positive, oh and I agree Silent Hill is tragically underappreciated.

I still kind of want to see this. The trailer gives me more vibes of feeling like the games than the previous films did. At least going by how things look and stuff. It feels like the Raccoon City from the games. Not sure if I’ll actually see it in theaters, but it might be something I’ll at least watch at some point.

The ads for this remind me of an actual Resident Evil 2 movie instead of whatever the Paul WS Anderson movies did.

Totally agreed. I’ve been surprised to hear a lot of people who think that it didn’t look good. Maybe because the other films are so played out and just barely ended. Does seem a little soon to reboot is the one thing I will say, but it looks far more faithful as an adaptation.

A reviewer I watch on YouTube did a quick first reaction video to seeing this. He was pleasantly surprised. Sounds like it’s far from perfect, but is a good adaptation and similar to Resident Evil 2 (the game). He liked it more than the previous films.

I saw it this afternoon. Is it a good movie? No, not particularly. I thought it was kind of boring and the plot was paper-thin to non-existent. But it is still better than the last few movies, which isn't a high bar. I did like the late 90s setting and the production design looking more like the games. It definitely felt more like RE than the original films. I liked the cast overall.... the main reason I was even interested in this was for Kaya.
I'd say it is more of a rental... not anything you need to rush out for.

Yeah I saw a test screening for this back in the summer as I mentioned earlier. It's decent IMO for a Resident Evil movie. Definitely better than the last few Paul WS Anderson movies. Kaya was good and the supporting players were also pretty good including Robbie Amell, Donal Logue and Neal McDonough. The special effects weren't done yet on the version I saw, so I only saw animated sketches of a certain monster in the final act. I am curious to see the final product.
It's definitely very B-movie horror.

I thought all of the creatures looked good except for the final one on the train. That looked pretty bad.
There was a mid-credit scene. I didn't stay longer to see if there was another.

A friend reviewed it and didn't like it.

A rental it is.
Welcome to Raccoon City has way more moving parts that often look cheap and undercooked. While the latest remakes of the games are triumphs of set design and crisp art direction, the film appears lower in budget, even compared to Anderson’s original from 2002. Could Roberts have made a better film with a bigger budget? Probably not. There’s a fundamental difference between exploring a game’s level and seeing it in the passive format of cinema. Roberts doesn’t offer much beyond situations born from fan fiction than any kind of coherence to the narrative. Moments happen with little to no sense that the plot is going anywhere beyond the mayhem of killing monsters, and poorly at that.
A rental it is.

Scott Mendelson just posted that this shit dropped 59% from its opening on Tuesday. It's on its way to open in the single digits by the weekend's end. Seems not even the "fans" wanted to see this one by the looks of things.

I walked in with.very low expectations and that served me quiet well, as I should have seen this coming. The first 30 minutes does a pretty decent job of setting up the tone, but it's quickly forgotten and before you know it the movie is over. I feel that Sony took a very hands off approach to this movie. The budget was only 2mil more than the 2002 RE movie. While the sequels to the 2002 film got larger budgets, that still didn't fix the numerous problems with those movies. Ultimately I feel that WTRC should have been two movies. I was happy to see Chris and Jill roaming the mansion, but I can't help but feel cheated out of a more interesting movie. I think at this point RE is best left off the big screen. The games lend themselves to being very cinematic, but it seems no one can agree how that needs to approached. The best thing to come from this mess, is that this won't happen to Devil May Cry.

Re: Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021, D: Roberts)
Caught a matinee screening of this earlier today.
Thought the movie was average, even with my expectations tempered.
I enjoyed the first 30-40 minutes of the film, as well as many of the visuals & set-pieces, as they were closer to the aesthetics of the Video Games.
Thought the use of Jennifer Paige's song "Crush" was hilarious, as was Jill's (Hannah John-Kamen) joke about giant snakes & sharks
After all of that, I didn't care much, as the film consistently felt like fan-fiction.

I’ve heard the portrayal of Leon isn’t the best, and that the film would play out better if it wasn’t the first two games combined.

The first being the first game, possibly with some elements from Zero. The second being both the 2nd and 3rd games.
The 2nd and 3rd games take place during the exact same time for the most part and while RE2 focuses on Claire and Leon in Raccoon City... RE3 focuses on Jill in Racoon City.
