Re: Silence of the Lambs (1991) or Se7en (1995)?

I saw silence of the lambs when I was 15 years old and it creeped me out big time. Years later, I found it to be pretty boring.

I saw seven when I was in the military - I thought it was cool but once the credits rolled I was mocking Brad Pitt's "Come on man what's in the box!!!" to the friends I was with - we all thought it was just an average film.

I really enjoy Silence of the Lambs. Despite the horrific subject matter, it's made as a crowd-pleaser, with everyone working at the top of their craft. I was a Fangoria-reading horror-movie addict back when Silence came out, and it was bizarre to overhear people all over (in the super-market, teachers at school, people on TV) talking about this big serial killer movie.

I wouldn't take a 12- or a 14-year-old to see The Silence of the Lambs.

I knew I answered this same question before.

And in that one I voted for Seven.

I recently watched Baby Driver having seen it at the drive-in this past summer. I was apprehensive as my wife picked it and my kids had been asking to see it again. I still found myself enjoying the movie despite whats happened with Kevin Spacey.... I would probably be OK to watch the usual Suspects or Se7en again...

I agree. It's a much more satisfying experience for the young kid to sneak into an R-rated movie on their own then have to go with a parent.

Hollywood doesn't really make psycho thrillers like Silence or Seven anymore. I guess TV crime shows have filled that niche.

Same here.
For Se7en, didn't they purposely make the city it takes place in unidentifiable? I think it worked well for what they were going for, and the movie is great. But I just appreciate Silence of the Lambs better, for reasons like the one you cited.

Seven. While I think The Silence of the Lambs is a great movie, my favorite Lector movie remains Manhunter. Seven I just thought was more revolutionary at the time, with the score, the cinematography, and the sheer darkness of the movie...And that ending has to be one of the all-time greatest. And I thought it was the movie where Brad Pitt really showed what he could do...And Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey were great...Still remember watching it for the first time and having no idea Spacey was in it...The script by Andrew Kevin Walker is one of the all-time best, and was released in paperback...Would highly recommend people track down that book (it also had the original script for 8mm...Didn't turn out to be a great movie, but it reads good on the page)...

Spoiler:
It's not revisionist. The actual opening credits for the movie show it as SE7EN.

I liked both but I think the cinematography in Se7en is more creative. The rain chase scene is awesome.

SOTL, for me. Just a perfect movie.

Plus, I'm a huge fan of Thomas Harris.

Both actors did amazing jobs and both as I revisit Silence now, are intense psychological serial killer thrillers and each with a twist.

So which do you think is the better movie, serial killer movie, etc...? Not talking about best serial killer movies of all time as I’m sure others, more realistic have done it better. Just with Demme’s Silence of the Lambs and Fincher’s Se7en.
I think if we're comparing the serial killers in both films, I feel like "Buffalo Bill" was the more realistic portrayal, and added to the overall film.

Lecter's description of "Bill":
Billy is not a real transsexual... Billy hates his own identity you see, and he thinks that makes him a transsexual.

Se7en felt like a much more visually stylized film, and in ways, so was the story. John Doe has this Biblical-inspired MO, he's one step ahead of the detectives at every point. He came across more as a super-villain, right up until the end.

That's a good point and I'll take it. To each his own...They're both great movies...And I'd also give props to everyone giving praise to Henry:Portrait of a Serial Killer...Also a great movie...Michael Rooker was incredibly eerie in that...

Now they do. Question was, did they when it was originally released.

Allow me to quote myself

Both films are serial killer movies, but Seven’s killer is like a super villain mastermind and his scenario is far too complex to ever work. SOTL is much more grounded in reality, drawing heavily from the work of the FBI’s John Douglas who invented criminal profiling for serial killers.
