Seven is a GREAT film, but even so, in my opinion SOTL is an all time great movie, one of the best movies ever made, with truly iconic performances by Hopkins and Foster.

I found SOTL overrated. I watched it again recently after not having seen it since it's release and it didn't hold up as good as I thought it would. Hopkins is great, but Foster was over-acting in a bunch of scenes and her accent wasn't convincing. Some of the supporting actors had some bad line deliveries as well. Didn't care for some of the direction either. It wasn't a bad film, but it wasn't any special in my opinion.

I'm not much of a Fincher fan, and whatever faults Seven has - it really has an amazing feeling of dread and despair. It felt like another world and went a long way of creating the mood needed for watching this.

I'll probably get throat-punched for saying this, but I've always found Jodie Foster's acting in SOTL as crossing the line into melodramatic. She is just breathlessly over the top in a lot of her scenes. That moment when she runs dramatically back to Hopkins' cell to stand face-to-face with him is pure movie cheese. Hopkins is pitch-perfect throughout, but he really isn't in the movie that much. So we're left with Foster's over-acting and Buffalo Bill, who just isn't as interesting a character as Hannibal.

Seven, meanwhile, fills you with a sense of dread from almost the beginning and just doesn't let up. And the script is finely tuned like clockwork. Every single moment in the movie counts. Now, before someone else points it out, I'll agree Pitt's acting has its weak moments too ("What's in the baaaaaaaaahx?!"), but for the most part he plays the part perfectly as written and is surrounded by rock-solid performances by Freeman, Spacey and (yes) Paltrow.

I hope this doesn’t sound like an inane comparison. I know Se7en didn’t get awards and acclaim as Silence, but each has a distinct style in dealing with deranged, but brilliant serial killers. It’s hard not to see comparisons between Hannibal and John Doe. Both actors did amazing jobs and both as I revisit Silence now, are intense psychological serial killer thrillers and each with a twist.

So which do you think is the better movie, serial killer movie, etc...? Not talking about best serial killer movies of all time as I’m sure others, more realistic have done it better. Just with Demme’s Silence of the Lambs and Fincher’s Se7en.

I vote for Silence of the Lambs. The sense of “this could be happening in your backyard” ups the creep factor for me. Se7en is just too surreal in its “ick” factor to make me feel that same sense of dread.

Silence of the Lambs was good and deserved the acclaim, but it just didn't resonate with me. I found Seven far more interesting and unique. Plus, that ending was incredible.

Also when did the revisionist Se7en dumbass naming start? Posters, trailers, VHS, DVD cover, etc. all have Seven. The Blu-ray has Se7en and even imdb now lists it as Se7en. Wiki and BoxOfficeMojo have Seven. It's been awhile, but I assume the opening title sequence is still "Seven."

I went with Silence of the Lambs. I had recently watched the Criterion Collection release and it still holds up so well today.

Regarding the naming of the numerical film, when I saw it in 1995 my ticket said Se7en. All the marketing was Seven, the marquee was Seven, but the ticket and the screen said Se7en.
