All The Money In The World (2017, D: Ridley Scott) S: Williams, Wahlberg, NOT Spacey

EXCLUSIVE: Ridley Scott is finalizing plans to next direct All The Money In The World, David Scarpa Black List-scripted drama about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III and the desperate attempt by his mother Gail Harris to get the boy’s grandfather to pay the ransom. While that grandfather, oilman John Paul Getty Sr, was reputed to be the richest man in the world, he initially refused to pay. The film is being produced and financed by Imperative Entertainment, and Tom Rothman has locked down a worldwide distribution deal for Sony Pictures.

The role of Harris is one that has attracted top-flight actresses. Angelina Jolie met on it last week and was offered the pic, but scheduling didn’t work for her. Scott is right now trying to lock down Natalie Portman. Coming off an Oscar-nominated turn playing another fact based figure in Jackie, Portman is a strong match for the material but this would have to bounce back quickly from having pregnancy. It looks good she’ll play the role, sources said. Scott will also lock in a big star to play the cantankerous Getty. Word is he met with Jack Nicholson. That appears unlikely, but he will get a big actor for sure. Production is set for Italy in May.

All this means that Scott will push back The Cartel, the eagerly awaited adaptation of the Don Winslow bestseller about the drug war which had been in active preproduction for Fox. That film will get made right after, with script still being worked on by Shane Salerno, and Scott is hoping to re-team with his Body of Lies star Leonardo DiCaprio. Scott sometimes does this, slipping in intriguing character-based dramas between his world creation blockbusters, with The Counselor the most recent example. He is coming off a huge film in Alien: Covenant, which Fox opens on May 19.

Imperative’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas will produce with Scott, and Mark Huffam and Kevin Walsh of Scott Free. Quentin Curtis and Chris Clark will also produce. David Beaubaire is overseeing for Sony.

All The Money In The World tells a harrowing Italian-set drama, a parable about how wealth can be a curse. Paul Getty was the grandson of J Paul Getty, a magnate who didn’t think much of his own pampered, underachieving son. The grandson seemed likely to follow in those dubious footsteps. Raised in boarding schools, the teen frequented nightclubs, led a bohemian life and attended left wing demonstrations. One night in 1973, he didn’t return home, and soon a ransom calling for $17 million was sent to the family. The initial suspicion was the rebellious teen might have staged his own kidnapping, but it soon became clear that this was legitimate, might well have been perpetrated by mob-tied culprits, and that the teen was in grave danger: the kidnappers sent a lock of hair, and the teen’s several right ear, in an envelope.

Gail Harris had a complicated relationship with her ex-father in law. When she told the elder Getty she was divorcing his son, she refused his offer for millions of dollars and raised her children on her own. So when she came back to Getty for ransom money, he turned a cold shoulder. Some of his reasons were understandable: he believed that if he paid a ransom for one, he was placing a bounty on all 14 of his grandchildren. But he was also tight-fisted. Eventually, she and the boy’s father reportedly were able to convince him to pay $2.2 million (the highest amount that could be claimed as a tax deduction); Getty lent his son another $700,000 — to be repaid with interest — and the $2.9 million eventually freed the boy.

Getty, who was chained to a stake in a cave in Italy through this six month ordeal, never recovered. He lived a tragic life that included a drug overdose that left him with a stroke and kidney failure, and quadriplegic. He died at age 54.

This becomes another plum project for Imperative, which put itself on the map by paying $5 million for the David Grann book Killers of the Flower Moon, which is being adapted by Eric Roth. The company bought another coveted book, Tangerine, with Scarlett Johansson and Smokehouse attached, and has since set up the Gavin O’Connor-directed WWII drama Atlantic Wall with Bradley Cooper starring, and most recently set Tracy Morgan & Luke Wilson to star in the Macon Blair-directed The Shitheads.

This, 6 more Alien films, The Cartel, Scott's got a lot of plans.

Let's see if he can get a decent script from the guy who wrote The Last Castle and the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I have faith in you Ridley.

Scott doesn't do jack with bad scripts except make the end product look good. The lack of good story will remain.

I truly don't see how Scott can pull off all of this given his age.

Let's take few to mean 10 years and here's what you get. Not good.

2015 The Martian
2014 Exodus: Gods and Kings
2013 The Counsellor
2012 Prometheus
2010 Robin Hood
2008 Body of Lies
2007 American Gangster
2006 A Good Year

2007 American Gangster

These weren't all complete duds.

2015 The Martian -commercial and critical success
2014 Exodus: Gods and Kings -dud with good visuals and lame story
2013 The Counsellor -all out dud
2012 Prometheus -good visuals, bad execution, not a total dud
2010 Robin Hood -dud
2008 Body of Lies - dud with good cinematography
2007 American Gangster -commercial and critical success
2006 A Good Year-total dud

3 out of every 8 movies he makes are pretty good. Not proving much am I? But let's be honest, if you look at his career as a whole he has way more misses than hits. He just happened upon a time from 2000 to late 2001 where he had a hot streak. (Gladiator, Hannibal, and Black Hawk Down) . I know Hannibal wasn't that great, but it was a hit, mostly due to the franchise name. I'm also going to make the call that Covenant will be a dud with good visual moments now.

I liked A Good Year, it was fluff, but nicely shot fluff. American Gangster and The Martian were fine, I just could never figure out why the scientists were so stupid in Prometheus, but it was a beautifully shot movie.

The script for The Counselor was so far up its own ass it wound up choking to death.

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Kevin Spacey) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.

Shit, Ridley is cranking them out -- and. yeas, that's Willem Dafoe playing an Arab? The accent was kind of jarring.

He's supposed to be a descendant of Ramses from Exodus Gods & Kings.

I could not get past 20 minutes of Exodus and I'm usually a Ridley Scott apologist when it comes to some of his films.

Now, by that same token, Dafoe did play a Mexican in Once Upon A Time In Mexico.

I think The Counsellor ranks in the Top 5 films Ridley Scott has ever made. But I can understand why it didn't find an audience.

My guess is that this movie will get a limited release in December to try and get Williams' some award consideration and then go wide around MLK weekend.

IBT...New trailer gets released that pretends like Kevin Spacey isn't in this movie, which should be easy with him under all that makeup.

I'm blaming promotions/marketing for coming up with two Sony films opening against Star Wars: The Last Jedi... the Spacey thing is just icing on that shit cake.

You don't think Jumanji is going to do well?

I'm not sure why that's coming out at Christmas either.

I thought it would top out around $100 mil, but I saw some tracking the other day that says it could do $175 mil.

Jumanji seems like the ideal family holiday action movie. Holidays, families off for like a week and wanting to get out, a PG action comedy....it's gonna bank hard.

Against Last Jedi?

ATMITW opens 12/8, Last Jedi opens 12/15 and Jumanji opens 12/20. C'mon now..
