Its pretty directly. They're getting your money when you buy Blu Rays of their shows.

I'm looking forward to seeing this.

However, I have to assume this movie is a money loser for Netflix. How in the world are they making any money off this? $90M budget and then you have to factor in advertising costs. So $100M+ for a 2 hour movie on an all your can stream service.

So I guess this is just another in the long line of debt accumulation for them.

You swear off them but you buy their blu-rays. That doesn't make a lick of sense.

And The Get Down set them back $120m+ and got them zero publicity other than finding its way on to "Most Expensive Shows Nobody Watched" lists. Focusing $90m on Will Smith and Orcs probably sounded like an upgrade until they figure out how to produce $10m/episode shows that look more like Westworld and Game of Thrones and less like Marco Polo and Sense8.

I don't think their business model sees it like that. Individually taken on their own merits, probably very few of Netflix's shows bring in more money than they cost to produce. More important to them is that they grow their content library and keep their subscribers happy.

Did they kidnap your wife and kids or something?

Ha...no (in hindsight that would have been better). It was a long series of arguments between me, my ex-wife and Netflix. It was ugly, we dropped them, and the rest is history. That's the short short version. And while I am buying the blu-rays and giving them money...the bill says Amazon or Zaavi or X store and not Netflix. It's just my own thing, I don't expect anybody to understand .

Unfortunately private protest never seem to work. I had mine with Direct TV who was just apparently rated Number 1 in Customer Satisfaction. Bullshit I say!!

But will probably go back to them once my 2 year deal with cable is done to get a great new subscriber deal! Or Dish who I don't really like either.

Trailer makes the movie look like its a great idea turned into a stupid, cliched Will Smith action movie.

A writer on Heroic Hollywood gave it a 5/10.

Honestly, never was very impressed with the trailers, including the one I saw during the adverts before The Last Jedi.

Re: Bright (D: Ayer S: Will Smith, Edgerton, Rapace) Netflix 2017

I'm still looking forward to it. David Ayer is really hit and miss for me. I'm curious to see what kind of world building they're going to do. It's a lot to be thrown into a cosmic Earth with sci-fi and fantasy elements.

Either way, I like that Netflix is producing expensive movies. It's an interesting model, where advertising and distribution costs are very low. The people who make money on that stuff must hate this new model. This, and the next Scorsese movie (which has been on/off for the past fifteen years ... I feel like I first heard about it in the late 90's on comingsoon.net's rumor mill).

I will also watch regardless. Previews make it look like a cool concept. Production values are high

How does Netflix determine their return on investment for a movie like this?

Probably doesn't matter. They spent $90M on this movie and it's part of their content acquisition budget.

Re: Bright (D: Ayer S: Will Smith, Edgerton, Rapace) Netflix 2017

I just realized that this may be a sort of Alien Nation remake, but with fantasy elements instead of sci-fi. It's getting trashed and I just read that there will be a sequel.

# of viewers, repeat viewers and general feedback. The ultimate metric is quarterly gain/loss of users.

Most reviews seem to bag on the fact that this is "fairy tale content with R-rated material".

Yeah I'm still in. It looks like a cool concept even if done before.

Re: Bright (D: Ayer S: Will Smith, Edgerton, Rapace) Netflix 2017

I am in...but I also suspect the reviewers are correct in that it is not a good film. Look, if Netflix is going to make a so bad it is good film they can do this for much less than 90 million (see A Christmas Prince...doubt that had a 90 million budget, or maybe it did and Rose McIver is now the highest paid actress ever).

I'm not sure if it is because it was free, but I enjoyed it. It's a real good B-movie with good talent and a big budget.

I thought Will Smith & Edgerton were both really good. The first hour plus is better, and it gets a little ridiculous toward the end. But all the hate for this is misplaced.

It's a fun time.
