2017 Oscar Nominations

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
Not sure I follow you. But yeah, Meryl's lack of nom for Rikki and the Jets did seem to indicate that it wasn't a great movie, because the trend in recent years is to nominate her for everything.

^ Definitely but her problem is that she's too damn good, and when she's too damn good twice in one year the votes get split.

Andrew Garfield was good in Hacksaw Ridge, but excellent in Silence. He got nominated for the wrong movie.
I wonder if the nominations would have been the same if not for the backlash last year or if they decided to overcompensate.

I'm surprised at lack of Hidden Figures acting noms. Also, I think Ali will win Best Supporting. I haven't seen Moonlight, but have heard. Liked him on House of Cards and would love that. I think he could take it. Surprised nothing for Adams, but that's ok. She'll be just fine. Surprised Life of Pets wasn't nominated, but can understand that one and Dory. Really hope Kubo wins. Glad for Negga too. She's cute on Preacher and gonna see Loving soon...

Denzel and Viola both easily earned their nominations in Fences. And Ali his in Moonlight. Fences and Moonlight would definitely have gotten nominated, Hidden Figures I think got an extra boost due to just how popular it is. Best picture wise, Fences has a 95% w/ 8.0 average, Hidden Figures has a 92% w/ a 7.6, Moonlight has a 98% with a 9.0.

Also agree on Garfield being slightly better in Silence versus Hacksaw.
So is it Casey or Denzel?

Agreed. Bridges was good, but it feels like he's repeating his performance lately. Foster was great in this. In fact, Foster's been great in a lot of films. He's a damn fine actor and I have to believe eventually he'll get recognised as such.

Oscars: Academy Disqualifies ‘Arrival,’ ‘Silence,’ ‘Manchester’ Original Scores

It’s a pointed choice of words, as Barber’s work was deemed not “substantial” enough by the branch, as were Kim Allen Kluge and Kathryn Kluge’s compositions for Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” The Academy, in its rules and eligibility guidelines, specifically defines an original score as “a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring and is written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer.” There is, however, no objective metric by which to determine what is and is not “substantial,” beyond the collective opinion of branch members.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
I thought this was weird in the article :
Whether they were substantial or not is irrelevant in the case of "Silence" -- no movie is Oscar-eligible in that category if it has more than one credited composer. That's the reason that the brilliant score for The Revenant was ruled ineligible last year. (And maybe why Hidden Figures isn't nominated this year).

The academy's rules state: "Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible."

That makes sense, seems like a bullshit rule, but makes sense.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
I think the rule was set up after it was either Brokeback Mountain or Babel won for Original Score when something like 80% of the Score was not written for the film and only a few minutes of actual Music in the final was Original.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt should have gotten a nomination for Snowden.
He had the voice down and you could not tell it was JGL.
