I liked this just as much as Bone Tomahawk. Obviously different genre but the violence is fuckin' awesome.

I just saw it. Thought it was really well done. The violence was something else sure wasn't expecting some of that stuff.
The fight choreography was excellent though. More films need to have longer shots that allow the fights to be watched from a distance. Way more effective than over-edited shaky cam.
Vince Vaughan was great; loved his southern charm.

Vince really slimmed down for this. When does it get going, the action, the brutality? I’m 25 in and got nothing. Does this even take place in prison lol?

I guess around 50 minute mark is when he goes away. We’ll see what happens from here...

The best was for 20th Century Women where he starts off loving it and then hates it in the next comment.

Looks interesting.
For anyone who's seen both this and David McKenzie's Starred Up, how do they compare?

FINALLY got around to seeing this. I didn't think the build up was slow at all. Fantastic little flick. Craig Zahler has got some talent that is for sure.
I really like how the fight choreography was done. It wasn't all this breakneck pace and jump cuts etc. They were well paced.
Really liked it, Vaughn was perfect in the lead.

Holy fucking shit -- just finished watching this and it was fucking fantastic. One of the best films of the year and fucking BRUTAL!
There were scenes in there that had me like:
I think I'm gonna watch Bone Tomahawk to calm myself down.

I dunno I’m having a tough time finishing this. I’m about 1:15 into it by now and it’s certainly not grabbing me. Taking me bits of nights to watch this. Only 1 fight scene with that guard. It was realistic, but nothing special. No impressive choreography. I was expecting OldBoy type shit. Does it get better from here?

Yeah the movie goes for realistic over choreography, which is fine by me. The hallway fight in OldBoy never did anything for me despite loving the overall movie. Greatly preferred seeing him pull teeth with a hammer.

It's not supposed to be impressive choreography. What are you expecting? Woo Ping styled wire fu? These fights are true "brawls." It's using Vaughn's size correctly and to his advantage. He just brutalizes people. The opening scene of him just dismantling a car with his bare hands should tell you all you need to know. This is exactly how the Kingpin would fight. I love that it's not shot with close ups and quick cuts.

Exactly, there's even a scene where the
It's funny, because Vaughn has obviously always been a tall guy but because he plays goofy bastards all the time no one even pays attention it. Here, he lost a lot of weight and gained some stock. he's not necessarily cut, but he's definitely not fat.
The fights were great -- you could feel the hits and even the bluntness of when he blocked the hits. Hell, he literally tore a fucking car apart.

For those interested -- Zahler's in post production on his latest written/directed feature called Dragged Across Concrete. It stars Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, and Jennifer Carpenter.

The script centers on two policemen, one an old-timer (Gibson), the other his volatile younger partner (Vaughn), who find themselves suspended when a video of their strong-arm tactics become the media's cause du jour. Low on cash and with no other options, these two embittered soldiers descend into the criminal underworld to gain their just due, but instead find far more than they wanted awaiting them in the shadows.

i said i had a hard time getting through. i couldn't do it in one sitting because i wasn't interested in doing that with this movie. perhaps one day i will give it another shot because the brutality was surreal and Vince was great, but it certainly wasn't interesting enough to do it all at once...

Movies are made for movie theaters, to be experienced in one sitting. Not sure what world you're in that some director is out there going, "you know.. this should be enjoyed in multiple sittings over time." Sorry it's an inconvenience for you.

ummm...not all. this went straight to digital for some reason. maybe had a limited run in a few theaters, but when you're at home you can do whatever the fuck you want, so why anyone would question how i watch is beyond me...

Sure, when you're at home you can do whatever the fuck you want, but I do not know ANY FUCKING DIRECTOR THAT MAKES A FILM TO BE VIEWED IN BITS AND PIECES. Just because this is 2017 where home video has so many options for viewing, does not take that fact away. There may be some exceptions to that rule, but audiences before the digital age had no other way than to sit thru it or get up and leave. Sorry, not sorry, your ADHD can't comprehend that.
