Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017, D: S. Craig Zahler) - S: Vaughn, Johnson
Don Johnson is in talks to join Vince Vaughn in the indie action thriller “Brawl in Cell Block 99” for Caliber Media and XYZ Films, a person familiar with the deal told TheWrap. The film is the sophomore effort from S. Craig Zahler, the writer and director of the critically acclaimed 2015 cannibal Western “Bone Tomahawk,” an indie hit that received two Indie Spirit awards last year. In “Brawl in Cell Block 99,” Vaughn plays Bradley, a former boxer whose marriage is crumbling and who is about to lose his job as an auto mechanic. Running out of options, Bradley goes to work for an old friend as a drug courier. After he’s caught in a gunfight between cops and his own ruthless allies, he ends up in prison. There, he’s forced to commit brutal, violent acts. Johnson would play the role of the prison warden in the film, which is set to start production next month in New York City. “Brawl in Cell Block 99” is being produced by Caliber Media’s Jack Heller and Dallas Sonnier, the same duo that produced “Bone Tomahawk.” Johnson is repped by CAA and Edelstein, Laird & Sobel. |

I liked Bone Tomahawk but this doesn't sound interesting, at least at this point.

The ending is supposed to be pretty batshit crazy if the director is to be believed. He compared it to Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky.

Sounds like a limited theatrical/video on demand release.
No way this gets more than a few hundred theaters carrying it if that. Story sounds interesting. I would rent this. |

This is playing (premiering?) in Midnight Madness at TIFF this year. I was kinda curious until I randomly stumbled across the Blu-ray/DVD pre-order listing at Amazon last week. Doesn't really speak to much of a theatrical release, or anything worth paying TIFF's inflated ticket prices for, though I'd give it a shot down the road.

I am very interested in this because of Zahler but I simply cannot buy Vaughn in any sort of intimidating role whatsoever. Ever. I wanted to laugh whenever he was on screen in "Hacksaw Ridge". And let's not discuss "Psycho 98".

Norman Bates isn't supposed to be an intimdating character, he's the opposite of that. He's a loner creep. But he's very meek and bookish. I don't remember much of Psycho 98 except how overtly gay Vaughn played it.

Well, damn that was pretty brutal. Loved every minute of it. Like Bone Tomahawk, it starts off a little slow but starts to ramp up. I like the decision to use long shots of the fight scenes (much like old Shaw Bros fights) so you can see the movement and skill of the actors. Lots of one liners from Vaughn that make each scene he's in perfect. I can't remember much of Riki O, but the face offs in this were fan-fucking-tastic.
I do wish somehow Vaughn was Kingpin, not that D'Onofrio isn't great, but that's kind of where his Bradley Thomas character is. |

Just saw this one.
Like the director (and writer) Zahler's previous Bone Tomahawk, CB99 starts leisurely then draws you in, then churns you like a blender! You really can't predict where it will go and while watching it, it really got me to wonder "How can anyone come up with brutal stuff like this??" It is ultra-vicious and nihilistic; you might often ponder that Zahler may just be delighting in violence on-screen. But the commitment of everyone involved (from the actors to production) makes CB99 incredibly fascinating. |

this is very violent, but is no Story of Riki and reeks of C grade quality
