Red Dawn was always too cheesy to ever be taken seriously, let alone be controversial. Ah, the 80s.

I still don't get this hatred of Christians, i.e., pleasure of pissing them off. Is this a distaste for all organized religions inc. Islam or directly to followers of Jesus in all then myriad forms?
It's because they were pissed off by the movie without even having SEEN it. There was one famous religious figure who offered to buy every existing copy of it so he could burn them. On the news there were groups of people talking to theater managers saying that if "Last Temptation" was shown there, they would picket and/or boycott the theater, and some newspapers wouldn't print ads for it. Blockbuster and a few other video stores didn't carry it for rent for similar reasons. There was even a push to boycott the video release of "ET" that year because it was also from Universal, and they figured that'd hit them really hard. I can't remember any movie since then having that level of controversy.

After that scene, a lot of men wanted the same thing.

A woman I worked with at the time had some written material given to her by her church (which echoed what was being broadcast on some cable religious programs of the period). A lot of it was speculation or just plain false. Also, there was talk around the same time of a purported pornographic take on the same subject matter from some foreign director (I don't know if this ever happened or it was just some boogie man that was dreamed up) that got rolled into the discussion and was confused with Scorsese's film.

Raw Talent. What Jerry Butler did to that turkey was quite scandalous!

I used to have his biography. The turkey scene was completely ad-libbed. Dude was not right in the head.
