Which one is your favorite 1980s controversial movie that caused a commotion upon release?

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Some great stuff in that list but I'll go with Last Temptation of Christ. It's a masterpiece.

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Yep, gotta go with Last Temptation.

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Some good ones up there, between some of those and the ones I typed below it is very difficult.
Do the Right Thing The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover Blue Velvet Henry : Portrait of a Serial Killer Possession |
Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Those its not quite on the same level of controversy, but Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins. Two movies considered too violent for their PG ratings and were responsible for the the creation of PG-13. I havent seen any of the films listed in the poll.

I saw Silent Night Deadly Night for the first time this past Christmas, and its another movie worth mentioning for this thread. Good as a horror movie, and its dripping with sleaze. The extras go into detail about the protests and it was eventually pulled from theaters. |

Replace WHMS with Platoon.
|
Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Went with Last Temptation. I wanted to mention Pretty Baby (Brooke Shields again!) but it's late 70's.
|
Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Last Temptation Of Christ is a masterpiece. Pissing of Christians was just an added bonus, IMO.

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
If released today people would probably be losing their shit over Johnny Depp pushing quaaludes in Private Resort. 1980s... no one cared.
|
Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
This poll is meaningless without Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Had to go with Last Temptation. I think I've seen every movie in the poll except for White Dog.

Where's "Monty Python's Life of Brian"?

9 1/2 Weeks Body Double Robocop Not sure if they were all "controversial", but I doubt those would be made today given how neutered the major film market is presently. |

You haven't seen Red Dawn? I'm being sincere when I say I think you would like it.

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Red Dawn was the very first PG-13 rated movie (at least the first one that made it into theaters. I've heard others were given the rating before that, but they weren't released til afterwards.)

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Wait, we're not talking about the 1984 film with Robert Hays?

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Proud to say I've seen every film in the poll during their original release.I probably did the bulk of the movie watching of my lifetime during the 80s - I'm quite surprised so many controversial films were made then. My own personal experience was "The Last Temptation of Christ" so I'm going with that - walking through a crowd of tight-assed Christians was a good time.

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Voted for White Dog. Great late Sam Fuller flick.
Although I must say that list feels a little incomplete without Cannibal Holocaust. |
Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Last Temptation of Christ resulted in the fire bombing of a theater in Paris, so I'd probably go with that one.
|
Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
Interesting. I never knew that Nightmare on Elm St. and Silent Night Deadly Night were released on the same exact day and that SNDN getting pulled probably helped New Line.
|
Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
When Harry Met Sally was HARDLY controversial/scandalous. The film was a critical and commercial success and that particular scene was celebrated, not shunned.
Anyway, definitely Last Temptation of Christ. Brilliant movie. |

I've tried to search for it but there are so many Mad Max search results it's probably on page 150 or something.
There were two teenage boys obsessed with The Road Warrior. They watched it over and over and over, finally committing suicide by blowing their brains out. The movie was blamed and started a controversy over violence in movies. |

Re: Scandalous! Controversial 1980s Movies
I do remember Fatal Attraction really struck a nerve with people when it came out in 1987. I was in middle school so I was too young to totally get it but I don't think a movie had ever gone that far in dealing with the consequences of infidelity. I do remember some of my aunts in my family would say, "That will teach him not to pull that shit ever again on his wife!" And some of my uncles in my family would say, "I am not even thinking about cheating after seeing that movie!"

I still don't get this hatred of Christians, i.e., pleasure of pissing them off. Is this a distaste for all organized religions inc. Islam or directly to followers of Jesus in all then myriad forms?
