The BFG was dumped. It had no business being released two weeks after Dory. Looked like a fall release that got flubbed up by a crappy release date.

Finding Dory was nothing to sneeze at.

I enjoyed this, even though I'm not a Star Trek fan (my dad is a fan, so I went with him). I didn't do any research about this film beforehand, so I had no idea that Idris Elba was in this film.

Also, I don't know who played Jaylah. Of course, I could easily just IMDB who the actress is, but I think for once, I'll keep it a mystery. I really enjoyed that character.

I didn't recognize the actress or her name when I looked her up. My wife was thinking it was Rihanna but I knew it wasn't her because this girl could act.

She was the blade runner chick from Kingsman with the slightly odd accent, what else do you need to know dammit

She took an unusual express route to the top, two C- movie sequels and then Kingsman, Beyond and The Mummy.

Pegg's love of TOS shines here and now that the crew has hit their stride I can't wait to see the next one.
Finally saw this last night. Mallet here summarizes my thoughts on the movie. I've loved all 3 of this new Trek's movies.

I took my dad to see this today and he really liked it.

Honestly, after watching Star Trek Beyond 3 times I've enjoyed it more each time. It really is my pick as best movie of the Summer!

If they make another, I hope it takes place after Jaylah is done with Starfleet Academy so she can join the crew.

It may be time to somewhat reboot the series. They could always go back to the "Starfleet Academy" idea that they were going to go with after Star Trek V. It would have featured young versions of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy during their time at the academy. It would probably make Trek popular with the YA crowd.

That's essentially what JJ Abrams did with the first reboot movie. Been there, done that.

They just need to continue doing what they're doing with Beyond. The only reason it wasn't a big hit was the marketing campaign was terrible.

I hope we've found Chekhov's replacement here.

excuse me? what are you smoking? That was already seen and covered in the first movie in 2009. Kirk joined Starfleet Academy after being recruited by Pike.

How much of that movie actually featured Kirk in the academy though?

You can read the outline of the proposed SA film here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/22789

It's very different from what we got in the 2009 movie. I don't see how they can stop the audience from shrinking for the Trek films with this current cast. We've already seen that this cast hasn't captured the hearts of the younger generation a la Harry Potter or Twilight. An SA aged cast would give the younger generation characters to identify with.

The last thing we need is another reboot. Give this version of the franchise some room to breathe. Beyond was the best film they've done so far.

I think Starfleet Academy would make for a good tv show.

When was that article published? The byline says 2010 but the comments section below is dated 2006. If it's the later date, that makes a lot more sense as you can see how Abrams 2009 film lifted *a lot* of story beats from that script. Makes me wonder if Paramount had it waiting on deck when JJ took on the project and he had Orci, et al, polish it up a bit.

There looks to be an interesting special on History Channel tonight, 8.14.16. "50 Years of Star Trek". Looks to be new and boasts last final interview with Leonard Nimoy...

Finally saw this last night. I loved it. So much better than Into Darkness. It's like they fixed all the mistakes they made in that one and came out with a MUCH better picture as a result. Nothing all that deep but a lot of fun. Surprisingly I got a little bit choked up with the picture of the original crew.

Star Trek has never been aimed at kids, and I hope it never is.
