Yeah, this has to be a shitty time to own a theater. Literally nothing coming out at all to maybe draw people in. Such a double edged sword though as the risk is so high. I worry about the future of theaters though.

Shitty time for all kinds of live entertainment/amusement/leisure businesses. And I don't see 2021 being appreciably better.

Lets face it. It’s just a shitty time to be alive right now. Period.

Why not just build more drive-in theaters?

It’s too expensive and drive ins limit showings. Especially for really long movies.

Also big movies like this have huge licensing fees, Some drive ins couldn’t afford to show Tenet because of cost.

Drive-ins seem like they’d be a good alternative, but yeah there’s the issue of not being able to show as many films because most drive-ins only have one screen. Plus they have to wait until later in the evening to start showings. Also in a lot of areas of the country they would be hard to operate when it gets to be cooler in the Fall/Winter seasons.

And they require a massive amount of square footage.

I wouldn’t waste my time seeing any first run movie I actually wanted to see in a drive in.

Yeah, a little thing called "winter" doesn't make drive-ins a feasible year round proposition for much of the country, as has always been the case

What if, and hear me out, they make drive-ins but inside to avoid bad weather. And since it’s inside people can just parks their cars outside and there will be seats in front of the screen where people can sit and watch the movie. Like, an inside drive-in. I’m surprised no one has thought of this before!

sure, but what if you died watching a movie at an in-door drive-in? Cause that would suck. At least for me anyway.

True story. A man died in the theater I was in when I saw Star Wars: Rogue One.

About 20 minutes into the movie, house lights went up, they started doing CPR on the guy while the entire audience sat in silence, eventually paramedics showed up and ushered everyone into the lobby. It was crazy. And it was opening weekend so the theater was packed.

Same thing happened when I took my daughter to see Shin Godzilla. About an hour in the house lights came up, I thought it was a mistake and was about to go out and ask them to kill the lights, when someone came in and asked everyone to leave as someone came in to treat an audience member who had collapsed. Looked a lot like a heart attack from how they were treating him.

So we left for lunch, came back, and started the movie over again from the beginning. Really weird situation.

When people ask you what you thought of the movie on Monday morning, did you just shrug and say "Eh, everyone died at the end"?

At that point I hadn’t seen the end. We were given free passes for a future movie and sent home. I had to go back a week later to see how it ended.

On the plus side, the guy died watching the best Star Wars movie post-OT. On the down side, dude probably didn’t know it only 20 minutes in.

At least two people died of heart attacks at Passion of the Christ screenings... a pastor in Brazil, and a woman in Kansas.
