I wasn't incredibly interested in the story (all I could think of was Chris Rock's film-within-a-film in Top Five) but this trailer is pretty, pretty good.

That still has been used a lot to promote the movie, and I can't figure out why. It makes it look like a really cheesy B movie.

Trailer is OK, I'm not entirely sold despite the good reviews.

This thing could wind up with a 4% RT score and abysmal box office, yet it'll still likely sweep the Oscars next year. At the very least expect to see it collect all kinds of noms.

I like the story from when I read The Fires of Jubilee a while back. The trailer doesn't do much for me.

I'll see it when it comes my way though.

Fox Searchlight bought the rights and is planning to release it on October 7th - obviously the start of the Oscar buzz season

It should also be noted that Parker rejected Netflix's $20m offer in favor of Fox Searchlight's $17.5m, in part to how well Searchlight rolled out 12 Years a Slave and its Awards game.

I still want to see it but that the marketing isn't doing it for me.

I haven't seen much of Nate Parker's work. But I did like him in Beyond the Lights. He reminds me a little of Denzel Washington 25 years ago. The guy has tremendous potential.

Well this film certainly could be losing its run for the Oscars with all of Parker's rape history coming out. I'm wondering why is this coming out now? He has been in the industry for a while.

I heard about this. he was apparently acquitted and his roommate who was also accused, was convicted but it was turned over on appeal; but the girl later committed suicide. It's a fucked up case all around just from that little bit of info. I've already seen Black Women commenting that they won't see this film because of this Rape Situation.

It is interesting that its now coming out when he's been around for some time.

Had no idea about his history, haven't seen anything he's been in either... somewhat torn on this now. Also need to read about the events this film is based on...seems pretty controversial. This story ain't going away, it's only going to intensify from here.

The Fires of Jubilee is a great read. I read that in HS and I thought it was amazing at how wild that whole thing was. I always wondered as a kid as to why some slaves just didn't do that... and then I read that book.

Apparently the rape history had been on Parker's Wikipedia page long before this. Nobody brought it to the media spotlight until he is no in Oscar contention.

^True and Fox knew about this going in...however the bombshell that the victim killed herself is what has truly sunk this film's chances at an Oscar or box office and that news didn't surface until this week.

On a sidenote: I just saw recently Beyond the Lights with Parker in it. I thought it was a really great film and he was good. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is incredible (and gorgeous) in that. She's a real talent.
