You're aware that he already wrote the book and it was a New York Times #1 Bestseller, right? I'd hardly call this film "unasked for".

Great, so when the movie comes out (if it's ever made, which I highly doubt) we can look at the numbers. We can come back two years from now and verify if the budget was worth the return. Here's a question, if it was your money on the line - would you give Mann 170-200million of your money for this project?

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

Well Heat had a budget in 1995 of $60M and made $187M. Mann's last "original crime thriller' was 2015's Black Hat had a budget of $70M and made $18.9M. Mann's last film was Ferrari, which had a budget of $95M and made $43.6M. So if I were a studio head and I wanted to hire Michael Mann, yes I would rather pay to have him make Heat 2 as opposed to an original crime drama, at even half the cost.

Great, look forward to revisiting this!

Edit: Oh and by the way, if this never gets made - it means nobody bought the argument you just laid out - people with money.

No, it probably means that Leo passed on the project.

If the studio passes on this and then gets 82 year old Michael Mann to make an original crime thriller for $80- 90M instead, then it means nobody bought the argument I just laid out.

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

Out of the 170 million, 30 million would be for Leo alone, the rest for other salaries and production. Also, Apple would definitely get involved. They'll package this like they did F1. They'd be stupid not to.

I'm surprised the fate of this apparently rests with Leo at this point. I'd assume there would be at least some other interested A-listers that would also be a draw.

Well, Austin Butler and Adam Driver have been name circulating for a while. But Leo is entirely another level of celebrity.

Not confirmed by the studio yet but rumors are circulating this week that Leo has signed on and Heat 2 will be officially greenlit in the coming weeks. Speculation is that filming begins in 2026.

Looks like this is changing studios.

United Artists and Amazon MGM are in the process of picking it up. And Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Stuber will be the producers. Mann is still writer and director

Thanks for the update. I've been tracking this somewhat closely but this is the first time I heard WB had proposed to make it a trilogy as part of the budget talks. I'll admit I too have difficulty visualizing how well this will translate from page to screen so I understand the hesitancy and risk. UA and Amazon MGM echoing Shiherlis, "it's worth the risk."

Looks like this is a lock to start production. They just scored a $37M tax credit to shoot this in LA. And you all know, it's super expensive to film anything in California.

So DiCaprio will be playing the young version of the character while being essentially the same age that De Niro was in the original?

A few years younger, not "young".

It's not the years, it's the mileage.

DiCaprio would be playing Kilmer's character, Chris Shiherlis. Not DeNiro's Neal McCauley.

Are you sure? Austin Butler looks quite a bit like a young Kilmer.

The story takes place across two timelines - the past and present. DiCaprio would play the present character. Austin Butler the younger one. The article also briefly mentions DiCaprio is eyeing the Kilmer character. If Adam Driver signs on, he'd be the younger DeNiro. Pacino's Vincent Hannah is anyone's guess.

Christian Bale Circling Role in 'Heat 2' Movie

Rumor is it's for the role of an older Chris (Kilmer)

Artman 11-17-25 08:19 PM

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

Bale makes more sense then Leo imo (and it's the older version of the Kilmer character) I can't say I don't have any interest in this project, but it's still very low.

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

If this picked up shortly after the first movie, Austin Butler, despite being 2 years younger than Kilmer was in 1995, would be perfect as Chris Shiherlis. However, Bale is a great actor, so I can't really complain.

EDIT: It seems Chris' story in the book takes place during 1995 and 2005. Bale would be too old to play Chris.

1995 is the original film. The prequel portion of the book takes place in 1988. I thought the sequel stuff starts after the first movie and runs into the 2000s.

Correct. So is DiCaprio involved in this? Can’t see him playing young Chris Sherelis. Did they say who is playing the younger version of Neal and Vincent Hanna in the storyline that is set in 1988 Chicago?

Yep. If I remember correctly from the book
Spoiler:
The story takes place in 3 time periods, 1. Immediately following the events of the movie (1995). 2. Events in Chicago before the first movie (1988). And 3. Following Chris a few years after the events in the first movie (late 90s/early 2000s.

Whether or not Mann chooses that same structure for the movie remains to be seen.

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

I know Mann wrote the sequel, but it bothers me that Chris survived. His story should have ended with his death after being forever separated from his family. Especially with him basically half-dead in the street.
