Mann just confirmed this is his next movie.

With a few minor issues, I really enjoyed the book. I’m excited for this movie.

@DJariya
I know you didn't choose the photo, but I thought he passed away. Thanks for the shock.

Well, he just directed Ferrari. But yes, he's really old.

He's 80, which is nuts because his first movie was Thief in 1981, when he was already 38. He's three years older than Stephen Spielberg whose first feature film was in 1974 and released his fifth film in 1981.

Seems like training for Heat 2…

Butler would make a solid younger Val Kilmer. Of course he’ll also
Spoiler:
Have to play an older version of Kilmer’s character too. But that was 1995 so maybe he and Kilmer would be roughly the same age at that time.

Mann just turned in his script. Odds that it gets made anytime soon? Probably unlikely since Zaslav is looking to fire the heads of Warner Bros.

It has only been what 9 years or so? I would say...soon??

I don't think there's ever been a wider gap between how much I enjoyed a film and how little I was looking forward to a proposed sequel.

The first movie is in my Top 5 all-time. If this movie follows the novel Mann wrote, I’m a little nervous.

Gladiator II comes close for me. The result was palatable though.

In a sense, the character of Neil McCauley from "Heat" seemed like an extension of the same character of James Caan's role in "Thief".

I wonder how many "Pre-heat and Reheat" jokes will be made when this prequel/sequel finally comes out.

Movie is in serious jeopardy unless Leo signs aboard.

DiCaprio as a young DeNiro? I guess I could see it. He’s spent enough time with DeNiro to learn his mannerisms.

DeNiro was 53 when Heat was released. Leo is 50 now.

Damn, I was hoping it was a sequel to the Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy movie!

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

Michael Mann doesn't make "cheap" looking movies. If he needs that kind of money to do it right, so be it. The last thing he directed was the Pilot to Tokyo Vice and they shot that in Tokyo during Covid and it looked movie quality.

I assume part of it being so expensive is that they will shoot it in LA. I mean if they can get Apple to help, then wonderful. Their partnership on F1 was pretty successful.

The character isn't that much younger in the Heat 2 book. It's only like seven years before the events in Heat, and Leo still looks younger than DeNiro did then.

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

Okay that should work then.

I hope this goes forward. It should be a valuable IP for WB. The original is beloved.

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

I'm not picturing Leo as a young DeNiro. I was thinking more Val's character (with Austin Butler a shoo-in for young Val).

Artman 08-05-25 11:29 PM

Re: Heat 2 (D: Mann) - Prequel/Sequel

Would love to see an original crime thriller from Mann with Leo - I'd finance that over this completely unasked for prequel. Seriously, write the script as an original with different character names and let people who want to think of it as existing in the Heat universe continue to believe in that.
