Deadpool (Tim Miller, 2016) — The Reviews Thread — SPOILERS

Re: Deadpool (Tim Miller, 2016) — The Reviews Thread — SPOILERS
Deadpool set the record for an R-rated Thursday preview and February preview last night with an evening gross of $12.7M at 2,975 theaters. In the record books that beats the $8.6M made by Fifty Shades of Grey, which was the previous February preview champ. That Universal title sat behind the previous R-rated preview champ, Hangover 2, which made $10.4M from midnight shows in 2011.
If there’s any indication of how big Deadpool‘s opening might be, earlier this week, Fandango reported that the Marvel hero was the ticket firm’s top seller over the last two weeks, outstripping Ant-Man at the same point in their similar sales cycles. Yesterday, MovieTickets.com reported that close to 70% of its Wednesday ticket sales were for Deadpool. Weekend four-day estimates for Deadpool currently sit at $60M-$65M at 3,557 theaters, however some non-Fox distribution executives have it much higher — like at $70M-$80M. In a Fandango survey, 96% say that Deadpool is part of their weekend plans while 93% are excited that there’s an R-rated Marvel movie.

Sweet, it was sold out at the first theater we went to, and the IMAX we ended up at was nearly full.

My theater wasn't sold out, but there was a nice crowd, and they were literally playing it every half hour from 7PM to 10:30PM, which is pretty ridiculous for Thursday night in February.

Saw it and loved it. Can't really say much negative about it aside from Weasel and Blind Al aren't in it much. Kind of wished the movie was longer just to have more of it. Great film.
Not really a negative against the creators but more against Fox. Yes, at some points in the film... that money they cut from it would have helped it out. Still.. it's pretty lean and mean in a damn good way. Led to a lot of creativity. Still... some of the effects could have been boosted by more $$$.
Also... no way this film could have been anything R w/ the way it was now. And it was good w/ it. You couldn't trim it to get a PG-13 w/o it not making sense.
Also loved how DP didn't take off his mask except when he needed to do so.

Two big thumbs up. Loved it from the opening credits to the scene after the end credits. I was surprised at who played Blind Al. Us old-timers will remember Leslie Uggams.
Will probably see again soon.

the humour was off the wall - enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
funny bit, there was a father behind me with his ten year old and at the beginning of what he thought was a sex scene - he uttered "now don't look" - I had to just roll my eyes in my head ... I have no problem with parental skills, but why wasn't this child in school (during a 10:15 am screening)??
oh and the post credit scene had me laughing off the bat.

so, when you say post-credit, is that the very end of the entire credits or just the initial scroll?

I can't recall the last time that I've laughed in a theater this much before. This was an absolute blast. Gonna try to see this again on Sunday (One of the main reasons for a quick 2nd viewing was because I missed about 75% of the opening credits thanks to all the late-arrivals trying to find seats)
And did anyone else keep on hearing the opening of Michael Jackson's "Beat it" throughout the score?

Yeah, don't show up late. You will want to catch the opening credits. There's also some funny animation during the beginning of the end credits.

What's the deal with the unicorn? Is it something from the comics, or just something randomly funny thrown in?
No knowing any background, LOVED this movie, laughed so much, couldn't have enjoyed it any better.

Well, I was way off the mark with my 'Snakes on a Plane' vibe (in terms of marketing vs. people seeing it)...this is a success. No doubts about the quality though.
Probably my favorite Marvel Fox movie of the ones I've seen (Origins is the only one...I think), and higher than most of the MCU movies as well. I never saw Origins (or Elektra, but I doubt that was referenced), so I didn't get that action figure reference. Haven't seen Morena Baccarin in anything before, she was pretty good. And looking it up, the blind woman was Kizzy from Roots...pretty cool.

So there are mentions of "in jokes" here.
What prior movies are these coming from that cover this? We are seeing this next Tuesday, and I'm pretty sure I'm up on all Marvel, but the wife probably is not. Just looking to see what might be beneficial to review before hitting this one up. Thanks!

I've been wondering if this new incarnation of Colossus will forbid him from turning back into Peter for future X-related films. He certainly had a few chances to do it in this film, but never did.
Just the X-Men movies are what you need to catch up on. Professor X, Wolverine and Beast get mentioned. Xavier's School appears.
For the in-jokes, you'll need to see *Origins: Wolverine and Green Lantern.
*Hugh's mask got one of the biggest laughs out of me. As well as every mention of Sinead O'Connor.

Loved it, but:
Action -- if you've been following allowing with all the clips and trailers, they've pretty much given away all the action beats
End credits scene -- yes there is one; but to tell people to stay for it/them as if they'd be missing out on something if they didn't, is already setting them up for disappointment only bc the movie itself has so many laughs that when the scene finally comes, it's just...blah. I'm sure it's part of the joke, but to the general audience, I didn't see it working.
Fox studios -- how the fuck do you keeping fucking up fantastic 4, but able to knock this outta the ball park on the first swing (as a main character)??

I loved the end credits thing, I was cracking up as soon as he came out and I saw what he was wearing. Younger audiences probably won't get it, but it worked for me big time.
This one is easy. They put DP in the hands of people who loved the character, and because of the tiny budget, let them do what they wanted. I don't think you could do FF on a budget as small as this one, and the bigger the budget, the more eyes on the project and the more hands in the pot.

Saw it tonight, enjoyed it quite a bit. I was pretty hyped up for it, and while it wasn't quite as all around awesome and amazing as I hoped it would be, it's pretty darn good given the circumstances of how the movie got made. The major cons for me would be his origin dragging for a bit, saved only by some bits of humor from Wade, and Ajax as a villain who seemed fairly generic. I agree that most of the action beats were shown off in the trailers already. I also kind of wish they addressed the Wolverine version a little more then what they did.
The romance part of it was actually pretty sweet, they made a good couple. Ryan Reynolds of course nails the part and was basically what everyone wanted and had been saying about him since he was initially cast back in Wolverine. So happy that he got a chance to shine in this. I loved most of the humor; I think my favorite bits were with the cab driver and the little nods towards X-Men, particularly the 4th wall stuff. I also really enjoyed the
Anyway, it's pretty damn good. I don't think it's quite up there with my favorite comic book movies like X2, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man, Avengers, Dark Knight, etc., but it's pretty close.

I wonder with the success of this so far, it will give Fox the courage to do a grittier R-rated Wolverine flick? It's not like the PG-13 watered down solo flicks are making a killing in the box office.

Manohla Dargis gave it a mixed-to-favorable review in The New York Times:

Question to those who've seen it. I like PUNISHER: WAR ZONE a lot and loved the black humor in it. How does DEADPOOL compare to it?
