Appreciate the feedback from both of you. I think I may have to audible on this one.
Truthfully, I recall during the previews for Secret Life of Pets that there is some Disney / animated movie with a Hawaiian or possibly Samoan theme coming out. I think I heard Kubo, and just assumed it was that.
Thanks

Saw this with my son last night and really liked it. Still trying to wrap my head around the ending, which is actually a good thing.

Reads like standard business for the most part, sucks he had everything tied up in the company though.

Yeah, that's hard to see someone build a company like that and then lose it, but movie making is a harsh business and something so labor intensive like claymation is going to be hit even harder.
And Laika is actually turning out solid work. It's not like they blew it all on coke and strippers.

Saw this over the weekend and enjoyed it. Took my two daughters (5&7) and they found it a bit frightening at times. Would be interested in seeing it in 3D.

Beautiful movie. I saw it on a Saturday afternoon and there were not many young children in the audience. It was mostly adults, which was appropriate considering this really wasn't a film for younger children.

While by no means a financial success, I am glad this more or less has tripled its opening weekend gross already (sitting at $36.3m), it was down a very slight 18.5% this past weekend.

Watched this over the weekend and while I didn't love it as much as I hoped, the animation was beautiful and the story was generally sweet if not somewhat predictable. Glad it's holding fairly well at the box office.

Re: Kubo and the Two Strings (Laika Animation, 8/19/16)
We saw it today. I liked it from beginning to end.
Mrs Danger thought the Beetle character was too dumb, and didn't like his twist at the end. She also thought that the story was mythologically unsound. She thinks that People of the Moon from Japanese mythology should be cold and logical, and they were described that way in the script, but they were played full of anger and spite.
We both thought that Monkey was great.
I figure that when they descend to the material world, they get contaminated and are affected with emotions like the rest of us.
I'm also happy with the moral. I was afraid that it would be Love Conquers All, again, but they went more sophisticated than that.
I've been recommending the movie to people.

Saw this yesterday, and enjoyed it a lot. The animation was amazing, especially the whole boat scene. I enjoy stop-motion, so I'm glad Laika is pushing the envelope and incorporating new technologies to advance the art.
Found this behind the scenes and though it was cool:

Not a fan of this movie. I found the storyline too abstract. I never quite grasped it. I wish it had been done by the Japanese and been in Japanese with English subs. The American voice-actors and the modern slang and phraseology threw me off. There are also story/character elements that struck me as distinctly un-Japanese.
The best part was the end credits sequence, which is animated in 2-D in the style of Japanese woodblock prints and I wish the whole movie had been done that way. I googled to try and find images from this sequence but I couldn't find any.

Re: Kubo and the Two Strings (Laika Animation, 8/19/16)
I saw this on Saturday night and loved it. I thought the crowds might have died down by now, but it was packed and I had to sit a lot closer than I like. It was great to look at, the story was interesting, and the comic relief wasn't annoying. I also loved the While My Guitar Gently Weeps cover. I think it may have been partly that and partly the interesting illustrations, but I don't remember the last time I saw nearly the whole theater stay during the end credits. Not until the animator names started scrolling did people begin to head out. Even the last Marvel movie I saw--which is known for its post-credits scenes--had people leaving, and at the end of The Peanuts Movie the additional scene was playing and people were still walking out.
Sorry Ash didn't like it, but I'm sure there are some actual Japanese animated movies he can watch.
