Kubo and the Two Strings is an epic action-adventure from acclaimed animation studio LAIKA. Clever, kindhearted Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of Game of Thrones) ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato (George Takei), Akihiro (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and Kameyo (Academy Award nominee Brenda Vaccaro). But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With the help of his shamisen - a magical musical instrument - Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara) to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfill his heroic destiny.
Made by Laika, of Coraline, Paranorman, and The Boxtrolls fame. Beautiful stuff here in that trailer!

Cool. LOVE the musical choice they made there.

I think the trailer was in front of The Force Awakens, looked very neat.

Opens this week. Currently 93% on RT: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kub..._strings_2016/

I don't know if I'll see this in theatres, but I think it looks pretty good.

I'm taking my son to see this tomorrow. If you buy tickets on Fandango they include a digital copy of Coraline with your order -- a nice little bonus. Strangely, mine hasn't transferred to the UV locker several hours after purchase like the other free Fandango Now movies did; hope it does soon.

I'm looking forward to this.

I was goofing around on Youtube the other day and encountered a cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps by Regina Spektor that's part of this movie's promotion, I thought it was pretty good.

Took the two older kids today. Loved it.

Laika is 4 for 4 in my book. Love all their movies.

So no thoughts?

It's a shame Laika movies can't pull in even half of the money that other crap animation films make.

Just got back. I really liked it. Mature story, beautiful art style. McConaughey and Theron were both very good. After the mind-numbing story simplicity of Finding Dory and The Secret Lives of Pets, it was nice to see an animated movie with something more substantial to say about life and death and family.
I hope it does well at the Box Office.

Is this CGI or actual stop motion?

When I was at Universal Hollywood two weeks ago, they had a Laika exhibit. The exhibit had the model from all the movies, it was really neat. In this movie there is like a 15 foot model that took like 7 weeks to animate 40 seconds, quite impressive. I'm pretty sure the only reason Laika exists is that it's president is Phil Knight's son (founder of Nike), and Phil bought the company, I love their movies so I am not complaining.

Chris Stuckmann, in his very positive review, requests that people support the studio.

Re: Kubo and the Two Strings (Laika Animation, 8/19/16)

I absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end. I thought I would probably enjoy it but for me it really resonated - so much so I think it will probably be in my personal favorite animated movie list.

Of the other LAIKA movies, for some reason I couldn't get through Coraline (gotta fix that), thought Paranorman had an amazing last act but think the middle could have been tightened up some, and was a bit lukewarm on The Boxtrolls; however, I was so impressed with Paranorman and now this, that LAIKA have already built up a lot of good will and excitement for what they put out.

I really really want this one to do well. This year, I loved Zootopia but thought Finding Dory may not even find its way into my collection it was that bad for me. THIS is the type of story I really want to see on the big screen.

My family and I are going tonight. I love all things Laika.

I took my daughter to watch this on Saturday and we both loved it. We will have to watch Coraline and Paranorman.

Fandango emails you a code for Coraline. I don't know what a UV locker is so perhaps you already redeemed it and are waiting for it to show up in your locker?

Just a warning that Coraline is a really dark movie.

But also a really good one.

UV locker is your Ultraviolet library that moves with you from service to service. When you buy a movie via VUDU, Cinema Now, Flixster or Fandango, you should have the Ultraviolet rights to stream it on any of those services. I show movies in my office off a Vudu account.
That said, Coraline did show up in the account later that day. Strange that it took a while, but it did end up there. Nice free bonus for going to an awesome family movie.

I watched this for the Animation Challenge -- I didn't know anything about the movie going in but I really enjoyed it. Not Tim Burton but it has that feel to it.

Re: Kubo and the Two Strings (Laika Animation, 8/19/16)

I will cop to total ignorance about this movie (and Laika Animation). However, my 3 year old daughter asked me last night if we could go see this; seeing that it was animation, and thinking it was another Secret Life of Pets type film, I said yes, which now worries me. The brief reading of reviews I have done indicate that it is excellent, but maybe not lighthearted.

Is this appropriate subject matter for a little one?

Re: Kubo and the Two Strings (Laika Animation, 8/19/16)

Three seems a little young for this. Nothing in it too scary, but there is some peril and giant skeletons and monsters. I wouldn't have taken my kids at three to see it, but if you think she can handle it, it's a beautiful and fun movie.

At the very least I'd reset expectations so she doesn't expect a Secret Life of Pets type of movie..l
