Eli Roth or Rob Zombie

Both make movies that are quite gory. Output for both can be considered less than stellar by many standards. Both seem to enjoy making their wives leading ladies. Overall, whose sets of movies do you find more watchable?

I would have to go with Zombie . While H2 and Lords of Salem both leave a little (okay, a LOT) to be desired, I have enjoyed his other work. He just needs to learn that not everyone uses the F-bomb every sentence.

Roth's movies may look better, but I just don't find them as appealing.

Zombie hit it home with The Devil's Rejects. Eli Roth hasn't made a movie that good yet.

I pretty much only like one film a piece from each. Cabin Fever from Roth and Halloween from Zombie.

Lords of Salem is great. I guess Zombie edges out Roth for that, because outside of Roth's Thanksgiving short in Grindhouse he's yet to do anything that I've liked. Maybe Knock Knock will change that.

Re: Eli Roth or Rob Zombie

it comes down to Cabin Fever and The Devil's Rejects really. i saw the merit in both, didn't love them outright. CF is certainly more fun and really not to be taken seriously, while TDR is anything but fun and whimsical.

TDR showed what a director Zombie can be. Roth really hasn't done anything too worthwhile...

so Zombie, i guess?

I forgot about The Lords of Salem. I haven't seen that all the way through and should try giving it a chance as I've heard some decent things. I saw the beginning of it on one of the premium channels but got turned off by all the unattractive naked older women at the beginning and changed the channel.

I'm curious about Knock Knock too. It looks like it could be fun and I like Reeves for the most part.

I liked House of 1000 Corpses, haven't liked anything since. I have not see in Lords of Salem, so maybe that one is ok.

Roth has Cabin Fever, although I did at one time like Hostel.

I guess I'll go with Zombie, since he at least has a good eye for imagery.

Re: Eli Roth or Rob Zombie

I like parts of Cabin Fever and parts of Hostel but don't think either is a great full movie.

I liked Devil's Rejects a lot. So Zombie wins.

Roth is mediocre but his films are consistent. Zombie had made one good movie, one great movie, and the rest are complete shit.

I agree with Groucho. But I am not sure which way he voted. I am going with Zombie even though I loved Cabin Fever but hated Lords of Salem.

I really enjoyed Cabin Fever and The Last Exorcism (not sure if he just produced it or had more hands in it) and kind of liked Hostel, but that's about it. I loved House of 1000 Corpses (one of my favorite movies) and enjoyed both The Lords of Salem and The Devils Reject. Got to go with Zombie as Roth hasn't had a hit in a while for me.

I like both directors, they've both made an equal amount of flubs, but Zombie gets the edge for The Devil's Rejects.

I agree, I love House of the Devil and I wasn't too crazy about The Innkeepers. Unlike you I've seen The Sacrament and as someone who was alive when the Jonestown massacre happened I found it to be chilling. Two out of three (67%) beats Roth & Zombie.

Exactly what I was going to say, although I wouldn't say "yet" since it implies Roth has it in him.

I really liked The Innkeepers. Not really sure why so many seem to have a problem with it but I do agree that The House of the Devil is better. Haven't seen The Sacrament yet.

Re: Eli Roth or Rob Zombie

I've enjoyed all the Rob Zombie movies I've seen (all except Halloween 2).

Roth's movies aren't for me, unless you're talking about the ones he's acted in.

I really liked The Sacrament and House of the Devil so that actually does place Ti West above these two for me as well

The stupid hotel clerks and their comedic banter killed it for me. If it had been played straight horror it would have been way better. I mean - that fucking hotel was awesome and I loved the cinematography and production design but those 2 nitwits on desk duty were awful.

Agreed. I need to revisit The Innkeepers, because I think my opinion of it was skewed by how much I dug House of the Devil, which I had only watched a week or two before.

The Sacrament is pretty f'ing great, though. All except [that one part near the end].
