I'll officially start the Nolan bashing by saying how I'm soooooooo over this guy.

He'll be cellmates with M. Night in movie prison 5 years from now.

I don't agree with that either. Batman Begins was OK, Dark Knight ridiculously overrated, and the third one laughably awful.

He may work on Akira. No idea if this is related or not yet.

Warner Bros. is planning three films based on Katsuhiro Otomo's manga series and Nolan has been meeting with studio officials about the films, Den of Geek reports.

Christopher Nolan to Direct Action Thriller ‘Dunkirk’ For Warner Bros. (EXCLUSIVE)
DECEMBER 28, 2015 | 10:56AM PT
Justin Kroll
Film Reporter
@krolljvar

Christopher Nolan looks to be headed to France during World War II for his next project.

Sources tell Variety that Nolan will direct “Dunkirk” from his own original screenplay as his next project. Insiders say the yet-to-be cast unknowns will lead the cast, but that Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy are currently in talks to join the ensemble.

Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner Emma Thomas.

The story is set during the legendary evacuation of the northern French city during WWII. Nolan and his casting department recently began testing teenagers in London for lead roles, but the director also wanted to nail down some choices for the few adult roles in the film before the holiday.

“We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time,” Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production said. “‘Dunkirk’ is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen.”

Warner Bros. has dated the film for July 21, 2017. The large-scale production will be shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film for maximum image quality and high impact immersion. Shooting will begin in May using many of the real locations of the true-life events, which form the background for the story.

Rylance will also be seen in next year’s “The BFG.” He is repped by Hamilton Hodell.

Hardy, who is repped by CAA, can currently be seen in Fox and New Regency’s “The Revenant” while Branagh most recently helmed “Cinderella” for Disney.

I wonder how much he'll riff on Slaughterhouse Five.

Indeed, but in Nolan I trust.

Speaking of WWI I will probably watch A Very Long Engagement this weekend.

Re: Dunkirk (7/21/2017, Nolan) - News, Rumors, Etc.

Will Morgan Freeman or Michael Cane's character be able to explain everything that has happened in the war up to that point within the 2 hour and 45 minute run time?

Sadly, there are too few films about World War I. One of the best is Pabst's Westfront 1918 but it has never made it's way onto DVD.

Re: Dunkirk (7/21/2017, Nolan) - News, Rumors, Etc.

I think for me.....the only ones I've seen are:

Warhorse
A Very Long Engagement
Paths of Glory
Gallipoli (which Criterion needs to get cuz it's all kinds of awesome)

And... I think that's it, Jeez.

I guess you could throw Lawrence of Arabia in there too.

Still haven't All Quiet on the Western Front. Among some others that do get my interest.

I believe the reason why there are so few American-made WWI movies is due to the US's late involvement in the war and relatively less involvement in major battles compared to the British and French forces. Subsequently, less attention is focused in history class so the population as a whole has less interest.

Dark Horizons:

One Direction singer Harry Styles is set to star in Christopher Nolan's World War II action-drama "Dunkirk", joining the just cast Fionn Whitehead in the lead role.

The project, which will serve as the feature film debuts of both, centers on Operation Dynamo and the British military evacuation of the French city of Dunkirk in 1940.

The pair join Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh in the film which will be shot on a combination of Imax 65mm and 65mm large format film in many of the locations where the true-life events actually took place.

Nolan and Emma Thomas will produce and filming begins shortly ahead of a July 21st 2017 release.

There are very few directors who go back to making small films after hitting the big time. And at this point, Nolan has Kubrick-like status at WB. They'll fund anything he does. Why should he go back to small scale films when WB is willing to dump a truckload of money on his doorstep every time he feels like making another film?

All Quiet is decent but the ultimate WWI film is The Grand Illusion. One of the best films ever made.

I don't have an answer to that. But I prefer that guys like Nolan make the exact movies they want to make. Whether big or small.

Even his small movies were high concept. It seems clear to me that he always wanted to work on a grander scale than his budgets allowed early on.

He'll go back to small scale after a few flops like most directors. Or if he has a small scale "personal" movie he wants to do, like Roland Emmerich's Stonewall.

Tom Hardy has been officially cast now.

I'm always up for more Tom Hardy.

---------------

I still think his best film is The Prestige. Really fucked up characters w/ their ethics and morals to live the craft. Fucking great movie.
