Re: The Gift -- D: Edgerton S: Edgerton, Bateman -- 8/7/15

Saw it at the late 12:25 AM showing and it was about half full. Decent film with a lot of creepy moments. I did call the ending, though, as I figured
Spoiler:
once Bateman's wife went down after thinking she saw someone, Gordo would do something. Especially strange that she ended back on the bed and no mention by Bateman that he put his wife there. Once we got to the scene of Bateman going through the gifts, I called a porno tape in there.

There's a lot of talk about the ending and I think
Spoiler:
while the kid's eyes do look like Bateman, it isn't unreasonable to think Gordo did rape her. People say he wouldn't because he liked the woman, but when he listened to the tape (which again was easy to know he was going to record them) that she did make fun of him and called him weird. So it's possible he got pissed at her.

But the overall feel to the movie was good. It does leave you questioning and wonder what is going to happen next. Kind of like Gone Girl.

In regards to the first spoiler - I didn't take too much of his lack of questions since
Spoiler:
he asked her if she had a nice nap - so it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. She mentioned the fall, but maybe he thought she just got herself to bed

As for the ending -
Spoiler:
I don't think that he raped her. He was creepy and out for revenge, but not a monster. Bateman would have easily been able to find out via DNA test.

Bateman is great in this, and I think he really shines in these "under the radar" type films (I loved Bad Words)

Wasn't as impressed as most here I guess. Was expecting something a little more based on the praise but I thought it was pretty run of the mill.

Re: The Gift -- D: Edgerton S: Edgerton, Bateman -- 8/7/15

I had seen a trailer for the film and expected the standard thriller, but this ended up being much more than that. The performances were excellent. I'm not sure if I see myself watching it again, but that doesn't take away from it being a good film.

The only complaint I have is minor:

Spoiler:
It puzzled me how the couple had several interactions with Gordo, including him being at their home for dinner. Then when they end up at his "home" later, they begin asking what he does for a living and about his family. How does that not come up in conversation prior to this?

I thought that they (Bateman especially) didn't want to delve too much into it, as it would have indicated interest. Bateman seemed like he just wanted to get it over with.

Pretty much. Bateman didn't get too personal. He asked some questions when they saw each other and then during the dinner, but he didn't want to make him his BFF and just wanted it over. It is interesting, though, as when he is there in the day, they never wonder what he actually does lol.

Damn good film. Seems like Edgerton is a fan of Korean New Wave.

I'm actually amazed it had the balls to do that. Cuz our films lack the integrity to do things like that and keep it from being too much. Presented it all very well. Hell of a directing debut. Really tense film. Really really good stuff going on in this film. My theater was damn near full and that was a 7:30 showing.

Just got back from seeing this. Definitely Top-10 of the year material for me. Edgerton can write, produce, and direct worth a damn. I look forward to his next project. It will be added to the Blu-ray collection.

Karma is a bitch and then some.

Re: The Gift -- D: Edgerton S: Edgerton, Bateman -- 8/7/15

This was a pretty good film and it was certainly thrilling without relying on cheap scares. But my issue with it was

Spoiler:
that no one really comes out winning in the end. Bateman was a bully but the way that he was attacked was by the (implied) rape of his wife. The movie then focused on how Bateman felt about how his wife was (implied to have been) raped. Rebecca Hall's character was perfectly reasonable the entire movie (except for having a few pills for a few days because she lives with a bully) and what does she get? She gets to be a pawn in the games played between her husband and one of his acquaintances. That part just didn't sit well with me and it felt like her outcome was not really considered by the film.

Technically, well done. Still enjoyed it aside from the above.

Not every film needs a champion. Sometimes a tale ends with no real winner. Revenge is a bitch. Her placement was clearly taken into consideration. Not everything has to be comfortable. I'm sure Edgerton took it into mind of what he was doing. She was a pawn with unknown placement to her knowledge, that's rough as hell. Sounds like you just wanted to be comfortable with how people get hurt.

I fucking loved this. Right up there with Fury Road as one of the years best so far. So many amazing scenes. Great tension. The way they unraveled and presented Jason Bateman's character was fantastic. Same with Gordo. I'm hard pressed to come up with something I didn't like about this movie. The scene during the dinner party when they end up in the driveway, everything about that scene was fucking great.

4.5/5

PS I was surprised to see Busy Phillips in such an absolute nothing of a role. Yeah shes not cashing Jennifer Lawrence checks. But I thought it was bizarre seeing her play a nameless, faceless dinner party guest.

Outside of TV, she really isn't that big of an actress.

Re: The Gift -- D: Edgerton S: Edgerton, Bateman -- 8/7/15

Rented the BD yesterday and just finished it.

I liked it overall, but I don't think I would ever rewatch it. But I was entertained and thought it was a pretty good suspense film. Joel Edgerton was pretty solid as Gordo. And I liked Bateman playing a very different and darker character. Very creepy film. Funny how Gordo got his revenge on the man who tormented him as a youth and basically ruined his life, but didn't resort to any violence to do it.

If you get the BD, watch the alternate "Coda ending" I know it was cut for time & maybe some redundancy, but it helps fill in the blanks for some of the earlier scenes in the film. Especially the video that Gordo made for Simon.

Didn't even know it was out. Going to have to pick this up ASAP for the Coda ending.

It's street date is actually this Tuesday. The place I go to rent movies put it out early.

I went through the disc and there's a pretty good amount of extras for this movie. There's a commentary also with Edgerton.
