I haven't liked any of his films since Zack and Miri. He's really not a very good director. He's a good writer, though, even if he does only excel at R-rated comedy writing. That said, I'm holding out hope that Clerks 3 and Mallrats 2 will deliver. It'd be nice to see him return to form.

"Mallrats" is my absolute favorite of his movies, but I don't know how to feel about this.
On the one hand, I would enjoy seeing (some of) these characters again.
On the other, the ending didn't leave me with questions I was dying to have answered.
Also, no more Jaws to pop out of the water.

No mention of Jason Lee? He made the original for me.
I haven't seen him in much after Earl went of the air other than the Chipmunk movies, which I've never actually seen. I thought he maybe semi-retired or something.

Going by his IMDb profile, it looks like he's been working pretty consistently since My Name Is Earl was cancelled, but none of it is stuff I've seen.

I love Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ...
... but Jersey Girl was forgettable ...
... and Clerks II was an abomination ...
... and really everything else Smith has made since (Zack and Miri, Cop Out, Red State, and Tusk) has been absolute shit.
I grew up, Kevin Smith didn't.
The news of a Clerks III or a Mallrats 2 would've been exciting in the late-90s/early-2000s. Now? I don't give a shit.

I'm not saying I go out of my way to see his new stuff, it'll probably always be crap; but I like him in interviews and I'm glad he's still trying and may check stuff out when free/cheap.
You get brain damage on your honeymoon? Clerks II is not even remotely funny.

I saw it 4 times in the theatre.
The only way it could have been better would have been a Sandler cameo.

I've liked most of Kevin Smith's stuff. When he's doing hard R comedy he's a force to be reckoned with. Outside of that (Jersey Girl, Red State, ect.) the less said the better.

Before some people get in to bad mouthing Kevin Smith on a personal level (as a director--whatever) on this thread, I met him at one of his Q and A s a few weeks ago. He let me take a brief video of him and the audience wishing my dad well after my dad had brain surgery. It was a great morale booster to him and Smith was a real gentleman for letting me do that.

I don't understand how anyone can honestly say Clerks II is better than Clerks.
The the conflict of the movie is fine... but all the crap in between is just pretty awful. The dancing number? The donkey show? Come on...
It's easily my least favorite of the universe.

I think Smith's biggest misses have been Jersey Girl and Cop Out. I wouldn't say that Red State and Tusk are the best films he's done either, but I do respect him for stepping out of his comfort zone a bit and trying new things. I don't think Red State is really that bad though, Tusk I can see being a bit more polarizing. I think that's one thing a lot of his fans have a problem with is not being willing to give what he does outside of the View Askew universe a chance.

So this is going to be a movie about a bunch of 40-something-year-olds hanging out in a mall, right?

You didn't read my whole post apparently. I said that I don't think that Tusk is one of the best films he's done, but that I give him credit for stepping out of his comfort zone and trying new things. I also said that I could see why Tusk may be viewed as a polarizing film to some people and I do understand why some people may not like it. I still think my point stands though about people being unwilling to give his films that aren't his normal brand a fair chance though. Red State really isn't that bad its just different than what people expected from him.

too much bad acting, fan service and trying to top the first one. It should have just tried being its own movie. Jay & Silent Bob shouldn't have been in the movie at all. They were shoe horned in. I enjoy the movie to some degree, but its a very poor, misguided follow up to Clerks.

Absofuckinglutely. I'm hoping 3 will top 2.
