Been a while since I watched (just got the new Arrow release though) but I remember it feeling like a series of vignettes that come together in the end. That would be perfect for a limited series for a sequel.

Any Malls left, or are we pretending it's an alt universe where the malls never went extinct?

They aren’t extinct, but I think malls dying out is a part of it.

Only really nice, more upscale malls.
The kind of malls depicted in the movie are mostly gone.

Mallrats 2 should be fifty year-old versions of Quint and Brodie wandering around the same mall that's turned into a flea market. (Okay, probably not Quint because I don't think he and Smith got along, and probably no Gwen or Rene either. Not sure what terms Joey and Kevin are on now.)

One mall I used to go to in the 80s has gone that route. It's just a bunch of dollar stores, junk shops, and craft stores. I think the last holdout was Hot Topic after they lost B.Dalton's and the music store that replaced Hastings.

I could actually Brodie running a shitty comic book store in an abandoned Popular Girl store.

Trish the Dish is a camgirl who recently moved to OnlyFans.

Not sure what Buttman would be doing. Presumably he's out of prison.

One of the old malls in my area has also been converted to an antique mall, while another major mall will be closing by years end.

Kevin Smith on ‘The 4:30 Movie’ and Turning ‘Mallrats 2’ Into a Shannen Doherty Tribute

The filmmaker reveals why his daughter Harley Quinn Smith declined to play him in the new coming-of-age film, and shares his hopes that Sarah Michelle Gellar could fill in for the late Doherty in a new 'Mallrats.'

However, he’s now realized that Twilight of the Mallrats (Mallrats 2) should function as a tribute to Doherty. And instead of rewriting the film to exclude her character of Rene Mosier, he now has a dream surrogate casting in mind involving an actor who was not only one of Doherty’s best friends, but also someone who originally auditioned for another role in Mallrats nearly three decades ago.

“Shannen’s closest friend was Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I worked with Sarah on Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” Smith says. “So her being Shannen’s bestie and having already tried out for Mallrats 30 years ago next year, I would ask Sarah to step in for Shannen if there’s a possibility that we get to make Twilight of the Mallrats. I think that’d be personally meaningful for her on some level because of her relationship with Shannen … She’d bring Shannen’s warmth with her, and it’s maybe the next best thing to having Shannen there.” (Writer’s Note: Within a few hours of this story being published, Gellar expressed her openness to Smith’s casting idea.)
