What old horror films still do scare people today?
I was talking to my little brother, not biologically or legally but we might as well be cuz he started calling me that years ago, and he was telling me if it was ok for him to see Dracula.
My initial thought was Coppola's film. He didn't even know about the new Universal film. He was talking about the old Lugosi one. He's 13. It amused me that he may have thought that that film was maybe too scary for him or something. I wouldn't show him Coppola's... I think. I dunno. Probably not. I don't think he watches much of anything w/ that kind level for sexuality. He is used to today's type of horror, well modern movies in general, which is more visual in providing "horror" or whatever. I told him it'd be fine but he may be bored by it cuz the old horror is nothing like today. I actually had a hard time in trying to relay the shift of violence/sexuality to him. Essentially boiling it to some old horror is very tame compared to today.
We ended up watching Predator anyway.
I don't get scared from movies. Disturbed or shocked by some things maybe but I don't get scared. That has never happened to me.
But to think older films that could still scare people today is interesting. It doesn't scare me but Texas chain saw massarce is a fucking crazy film. I can see that one making some people freak out while also laugh at like the stupid fat fuck in the wheelchair cuz he comes off corny.
It did make me think as to what old horror films DO provide the genre expectations?
Old is a vague word but you know what I mean.

I'm not sure NoTLD can scare people. It probably comes off goofy to people expecting horror. Hell it comes off goofy to me, still a damn good film though.

I personally have never found it frightening but I know a lot of people who still think The Exorcist is the scariest film ever made. The original Halloween is still very effective if you ask me.

Agree....Halloween is still good. Exorcist has always been lame to me; some really funny parts, though.

Don't get me wrong, I really love The Exorcist and think its a great film (I even like the sequels). I just never found it frightening. There are some creepy aspects to it but all in all just has never scared me very badly.

I recall watching The Exorcist re-release 15 some odd years ago when I was in college and my friends and I found most of the stuff more humorous then scary. Of course we were a bunch of 18-19 year old kids that weren't taking that sort of stuff very seriously.

Thematically I think I think that would hold up well. Some bits may come off funny today but I think may hold up.
CC released that, right? I need to get that. I haven't seen that thing in like 10 years.

I'm an agnostic but the Exorcist still gets under my skin. Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are both still pretty scary/disturbing as well.

Halloween, I don't feel anything for. Great movie but it doesn't do anything. The Exorcist I might put into a disturbing kind of category. I can see how it may be scary. Anyone here see it when it was released? How'd ya take it?

I was only 8 when I saw it back in '73. I went with my older cousins and their friends. All I remember was that I wasn't scared because they we're laughing thoughout it and kept saying "Eat Me!" and for days afer that they kept saying that line. Seeing it later as a teenager I thought it was alright and I thought you had to be really stupid to believe in that shit.

Another vote for The Innocents. Maybe the original Village of the Damned. How about Corman's Masque of the Red Death?
You know what, show him Mulholland Dr.

I recently spoke to a 25 year old who saw Night Of The Living Dead for the first time this Halloween and she found it very creepy and disturbing.

well it was the face that was scary but since 1973 that type of evil face and voice has been used a lot. so i'm sure many are used to it and don't find it scary.

I don't understand this line of thinking. Did you scoff at the ludicrous concept of a man dressing up as a bat and fighting crime in the Dark Knight? Why do you allow for suspension of disbelief in an action movie, but not horror? Every movie is a fantasy, yet I see a trend of people approaching horror flicks with a cynical attitude of "c'mon, this is stupid, you can't scare me!" I love when a horror film scares the crap out of me, I've got nothing to prove to a movie.

Seeing Texas Chainsaw today, Hooper really put in no nonsense brutality shit in there. The way Leatherface puts that girl on the hook, no flash, no build up... just BOOM. She's on that thing. It is a disturbing movie for sure.
