Bought my ticket to this on Thursday night. Pretty excited.

A little jealous of my friends who saw an Advance Screening last week at the Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco. There was a Q&A after the screening and they all got to meet Nicolas Winding Refn.

They offered me a ticket but I already made plans :(

What is it with this guy's fetish for neon in his movies? Goes all the way back to his danish Pusher trilogy. It's kinda like Tarantino's thing for feet.

Looking forward to this. I have yet to see a bad film by NWR (seen them all except for Bleeder). Even what I consider to be his weakest film (Pusher 3) is still good.

I have one theatre by me playing it. I'm not sure if I'll get to it. Alot of releases this week. I might want to check out The Shallows in the theatre first, but that depends on the reviews. I'll see ID4 on Thursday.

He's colorblind and cannot see mid-tones, which is why everything is extremely high contrast.

Saw this tonight. Only 9 people in the theater. The crowd was definitely divided on this one, as I was hearing people talk about it on my way out.

I saw this at a big multiplex in Vancouver tonight. Friday night at 7:40 and besides me there were 3 other people in the theater. Those 3 people left about 20 minutes in.

I had a pretty mixed reaction to the film myself. I'm trying to figure out if I liked it or not. I didn't quite connect the dots on everything, so I'll probably check it out again when it starts streaming. The juxaposition of music and imagery was pretty fantastic at times, but the film itself was pretty hollow, which I guess is the point considering the subject matter. Anyhow, I enjoyed it more than Only God Forgives, I'll say that much.

I felt pretty similar about the film. As to expected there is a lot of great imagery and music/sound design (as Cliff Martinez returns here) but there isn't much stringing all of it together.

Making the film hollow because of the subject matter is a bit on the nose. There was a chance to make this film a little bit more full around the edges, as there was a lot in this film to do exactly that.

Once again, NWR has made a film that requires multiple viewings to catch all of his symbolism and deeper meaning, even though once this film concludes it almost feels like those elements are underdeveloped.

And that's the point. This is a film about a shallow, vapid world filled with one-dimensional characters who are devoid of personality. As such, this film is a glib observation of that fashion world, full of shiny surfaces and all things glittery but with the depth of a pothole.

Is Refn a genius for so perfectly representing the exact thing he's admonishing, or should he have attempted to imbue his film with more complexities so that it can't be seen as a hollow vessel for beautiful imagery? I'm going with the former, and I have a feeling subsequent viewings will only reinforce that notion.

There was a Q&A after our show with Refn and Fanning, moderated by Pete Hammond. Fanning was quiet most of the time, mostly because questions were directed at Refn, who spoke in short answer and didn't offer up much meaty information.

Cliff Martinez's score may be his best yet. Absolutely exquisite.

This should be a nom for cinematography. This is a gorgeous film filled with gorgeous people.

Saw this last night. I really do think NWR should be allowed to re-make an 80s thriller like Cat People or something similar. He's got that kind of touch. Music and visuals aside, this was the epitome of pretentious film making at its worst (or maybe finest).

The Arclight Hollywood had Nicolas Winding Refn, Keanu Reeves, and Composer Cliff Martinez do a Q&A tonight. I enjoyed it, I've seen it twice. It reminded me at times of Beyond The Black Rainbow mixed with The Informers. I'll buy the blu.

Refn needs to stick to minimal dialog unless it's a singular show piece like Bronson.

Everything was just weirdly staged in this movie when dialog was involved, once they got past that and the music and visuals took over I was a fan, though the entire movie had an abundantly creepy Pervy vibe.

Jena Malone played a sexy pedo well initially. Dude from Dexter was crazy looking. The final third of this movie was just too fucking bizarre for me, and I can handle bizarre.

This was made available via VOD today, should be on Amazon Instant by years end.
