"Bold statement" =/= "factually false"

The Life Aquatic is his best work.

I have yet to see Grand Budapest Hotel and I was severely disappointed in Moonrise Kingdom but Fantastic Mr. Fox is a modern masterpiece.

Seriously though, while I personally prefer the first film, you are hardly the first person to say this.

Nonsense. He could write a book on modern-day philosophy.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel are the only 2 Anderson films I would consider to be not very good at all. The Darjeeling Limited, The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr Fox are all really good. But I do agree with you a little in the sense that Royal Tenenbaums, Bottle Rocket and Rushmore are definitely his best films.

Either way he's pushed his particular aesthetic as far as humanly possible, and if he doesn't try something new, something fresh I see his future as a filmmaker being pretty bleak.

Agreed. The aesthetic and feel of his films along with the quirkiness has been done to death - he REALLY needs to do something different... Wes Anderson's become to cookie-cutter/formulaic in his approach. Would like to see if he can handle a straight out drama.

Wes Anderson's formula still works for me. I loved Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom, and I'm looking forward to the Grand Budaphest Hotel. As a fucking cynical movie fan, I appreciate some whimsy.

GBH is phenomenal. as were his previous efforts. the only ones i didn't particularly care for were The Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Limited.

Yeah. GBH was very solid. Seem like it had all his trademarks in every aspect but at the same time refined, restrained, while also having a lot to throw at you. Splendid film. I can't wait for the CC BD.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

I'd consider Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel to be Anderson's two best films since Royal Tenenbaums. I still like Tenenbaums better, but I thought Moonrise Kingdom especially was wonderful (I need to revisit Grand Budapest Hotel.)

Guardians of the Galaxy was pretty standard fare.

Marvel films in general are highly overrated.

The older I get the more I'm ok with filmmakers sticking to the formula that works best for them. Wes Anderson is a perfect example of this. There are dozens of other capable directors out there who will make a different kind of movie. I say let the ones who like to make certain kinds of movies continue making them. As long as they're good...

I would've agreed with this when Darjeeling Limited was released, which I think is both his most unfocused film and his weakest effort overall.

But after that movie with the Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and (to a lesser extent) Moonrise Kingdom, I think Wes Anderson reinvigorated his personal style by mixing in a stronger narrative structure to his films so that they no longer seemed just aimlessly quirky.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

I have yet to see a Wes Anderson movie. I tried twice.

I bought a used-VHS copy of ROYAL TENENBAUMS, but it turned out to be a really poor bootleg and just a few seconds of playing the tape was eating the heads of my VCR, so I threw it out.

I once took a tape with a classical music concert on it and re-used it to tape LIFE AQUATIC off of cable (HBO or Showtime or something like it). When I went to play it, I see this opening sequence of someone speaking on a stage and instead of voices, I hear orchestral music played at slow motion. I wondered if that was a soundtrack choice of Anderson's, but I gradually realized that the VCR hadn't recorded the audio of LIFE AQUATIC and the music that was originally on the tape was now playing in slow speed.

I do have RUSHMORE on tape. God knows what'll happen when I try to play it, given my Anderson track record.

For a third attempt, have you considered trying instead to watch one of his films on DVD or Blu-ray Disc?

(After all, this website is DVD Talk and not VHS Talk )

I just can't seem to get into Peter Bogdanovich. I've tried watching a few of movies on Beta tapes I recorded, but the video is dark and grainy, and the audio is low with a slight hum. I have to conclude that he is simply an overrated director.

Adjust the tracking and you'll be watching naked Cybill Shepherd in no time.
