I saw your post in the Kingdom of Heaven thread. That's why I said I was pretty sure you wouldn't agree with me.

To each his own, I guess. I thought The Counselor was dreadful and KoH is brilliant.

That's a tough one.

Not much to choose from (where's the "sheepish" emoticon?).

I'd probably have to go with BLACK RAIN (1989).

For all the credit we give the Japanese for being so far ahead technologically, the CGI and SFX in most...not all..but most... of their films suck. You would think they would be waaaay ahead in that game.

You are totally right, the CGI is always cartoonish and lacking in texture. They just don't put much time or money into it.

Yeah, but nobody does men-in-monster/zord suits and miniature cityscapes like they do.

Zords in "Hong Kong" for THE GEKIRANGER MOVIE:

Goseiger (sentai TV series):

Godzilla vs. Mothra:

The original Ultraman:

Gotta be honest.... They could have done a better job on the Monster and Robot costumes too. Godzilla's eyes were lifeless and plastic for decades. Oh, I still enjoyed them. But let's not pretend there weren't some shit SFX in Japanese Monster movies.

Huston's autobiography, "An Open Book," is very good, though.
While he had his fair share of flops, I believe his batting average was well above .500. And even though a stinker was always in the mix, from his first film as a director to his last, he consistently made films from very good to great, to masterpiece:

The Maltese Falcon
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Key Largo
The Asphault Jungle
The African Queen
Heaven Knows Mr Allison
Freud
The Unforgiven
The Night of The Iguana
The Misfits
The Kremlin Letter
Fat City
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
The Man Who Would Be King
Wise Blood
Under The Volcano
Prizzi's Honor
The Dead

Also, Billy Wilder wasn't American (which is part of what I claimed in my "bold" statment), made about half as many pictures as Huston and really went off the rails in his last decade of filmmaking, whereas Huston was making great films right up to the end. Although Huston made more bad films throughout his career than Wilder(mostly because his filmography is twice the size of Wilders), I'd say they're running neck and neck when it comes to great films.

after 16 pages I'm sure someone has already posted this sentiment but...

In terms of quality and quantity of fantasy/sci-fi/geek appeal genre films, 2014 smokes 1982.

I agree his batting average was above .500.

I would also include:

Moulin Rouge
Moby Dick
Beat the Devil
The Red Badge of Courage
(mutilated by the studio, but still a very good film)

The only ones on that list I'd totally agree with are the ones I've bolded, although, to be honest, I haven't seen several of the later ones, including KREMLIN LETTER, FAT CITY and everything from WISE BLOOD on. But I agree with Jaymole about RED BADGE OF COURAGE and, possibly, MOULIN ROUGE. And I agree with you about Wilder's career suffering in his last active decade, while Huston seemed to continue to thrive. The upshot here is that there are several Huston films I really need to see before making sweeping remarks about his career. I'm on it. Thanks (FAT CITY, here I come...)

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

Guillermo Del Toro is a great visual director and is full of great ideas, but as a storyteller he's so-so.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

Pardon me for being self indulgent, but:

Peter Hyams is quite possibly the most mediocre Hollywood director to have ever been considered an auteur.

How about quoting bold statements made by filmmakers?

Fritz Lang: "CinemaScope is fine for snakes and coffins, but not for people.''
William Friedkin: "DCP is the finest reproductive system they’ve yet come up with." (http://thedissolve.com/features/inte...reer-and-fate/)

He's an auteur? First I've heard of it. The guy from what I can tell, has no beat or visual that follows his work. But maybe I am not paying attention.

The Sean Connery of Japan.

I like it but it is also kind of cliche for the period and its wants out of japan.
