Since theme shows aren't part of the show, mainly, your example makes no sense. As far as i can tell no one puts on a record, cd , etc. when those theme songs are playing. One of the few TV theme songs that would qualify would be something like the TV theme song for The Heights, which was also played during the show by the characters.

To pick ones that hasn't been mentioned yet: the beginning of Book of Eli where Denzel is listening to Al Green's "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" on the mp3 player.
Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" throughout Do the Right Thing

Agreed! I just told my wife about it and we had an interesting discussion. She immediately thought of Ferris Beuller's Day Off ("Twist and Shout") and Risky Business ("Old Time Rock and Roll"). But then she began equating "diegetic" with music that characters are performing within the movie, which isn't always the case (for example, Demi Moore playing "Unchained Melody" on the jukebox in Ghost is an example of diegetic music, even though Moore's character isn't performing along with it, just listening to it).
Then we began discussing which songs in The Sound of Music are diegetic ("Edelweiss," "Do Re Mi," "The Lonely Goatherd") and which ones are not ("Climb Every Mountain," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen").
Yes... fascinating subject!

First two movies, other than GotG, that came to mind after reading the definition:
Citizen Kane had several scenes where the music was used as defined here. Kane's Celebration with the band and girls and the beach party where him and his wife are having issues.
The Fifth Element...the Opera singer and the Fighting scene.

Let's hope some academic isn't googling "diegetic music" only to stumble on this thread and giggle at his computer: "They're all wrong. [snicker, snicker] That's not what 'diegetic' means at all."

The two that comes to mind and I don't think it was mentioned are "Eres Tu" in Tommy Boy and "Hold On" in Harold and Kumar Goes To White Castle.

I can't believe I'm the first one to post this. One of the most beautiful scenes in a beautiful movie.

Speaking of musicals and their use of diegetic music, all but two of the songs in Phantom of the Paradise are diegetic as they're all performing for Swan.
I only noticed that as I just watched the recent Blu-ray Shout Factory just put out.
