There's enthusiasm, then there's clapping for someone who can't hear you, which is being more psychotic than enthusiastic.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy (Gunn, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Oh come on. We do all sorts of nonsensical things as a result of cultural convention. One way to show appreciation for things is to clap for it. Movies in theaters are communal experiences. Traditionally such experiences have been live and clapping is done both to show the performers your appreciation but also to let people around you know that you appreciated the communal experience. It is not at all psychotic or crazy to clap in a movie theater.

You know what else is crazy? Wearing clothes in good weather. What function do they serve? No function. And yet I doubt you'd find too many people arguing that people who wear clothes in good weather are psychotic.

The Marvel Studios described by Gunn in that statement seems to be just the opposite of the one who fought with Edgar Wright.

Exactly- agree 100%- another example is sporting events- if you are sports fan watching a game on TV and something great happens, of course you yell and scream and cheer. But by the standards of some, you would be an idiot for doing so since the players you are cheering for can't hear you......

"No raccoons or tree creatures were harmed in the making of this film."

Saw it this morning. Loved it. May go see it again later this week.

The heroes were all great, and I thought Karen Gillan as Nebula was really cool, too.

Just like that.

I knew nothing about these characters going in, but I enjoyed the movie one hundred percent. It got everything right, but the humor in the script was just perfect. Good job to everyone involved.

And my audience all clapped in several parts of the movie. The movie was deserving.

Is Karen Gillan something of a big deal in another medium or something? I remember there being a big deal about her decision to shave off her red hair to play Nebula, but I had never heard of her before then.

She played Amy Pond, the Eleventh Doctor's companion on Doctor Who.

She was a pretty big part of Doctor Who the last few years.

I liked Days of Future Past better too, as far as comic book movies this year. I can accept being in the minority here though, even if I still give it 4 stars in the poll. To me I thought it started off a little slow and just wasn't feeling the build up and excitement during the action sequences like I did in my favorite Marvel movies nor was some of the humor or soundtrack as awesome for me that others have been raving about.

That said, the characters are all enjoyable enough to carry the movie for an overall really fun time. Groot in particular stole the show for me, with an impressive array of emotion displayed with such few words. And his friendship with Rocket was excellent. Quill was up and down for me; the Gamora stuff felt a little too predictable and cheesy for me but some of his antics, particularly in the end, were fantastic. Drax's deadpan literal take was also hit or miss with me. Some lines were funny, others not so much. I did love the overall scope of the film, and the color, costume, and makeup for a large number of aliens were particularly fantastic to look at. Especially Ronan and Nebula. Wish we got more Thanos. And disappointed the end credit scenes didn't really throw any nods to anything upcoming in the Marvel universe. At least not that I could tell.

Anyway, upper half of MCU movies for me, but a notch/tier behind Avengers, Winter Soldier, and Iron Man for me.

Had a blast seeing it in the theater, but I still rank Winter Soldier as the top MU movie. I loved every minute of that movie. Guardians is a lot of fun with nonstop jokes and humor, but I wonder how well it will hold up after repeated viewing watching it home. I'm already kinda sick of the "I am Groot" joke.

Ronan was a complete and exciting surprise. I remembered his character from the early Fantastic Four stories. They totally nailed his look. Costume and art design deserve Oscars for this one.

There has to be more to the story than what is out there, because atypical director choices (James Gunn, the Russo Brothers, Shane Black) are all paying off financially and creatively. Edgar Wright seemed as perfect a choice as Joss Whedon, but maybe what Marvel and Wright wanted to make 8 years ago is different than what Marvel wants (needs) Ant Man to be today.

I would never trade Edgar Wright for Peyton Reed in any situation...but until I see a Marvel movie I don't like, I'm going to assume they're driving the ship to the right place (yes, I ignored that Iron Man 2 exists for this statement to be 100% true).

But this is GotG's moment well deserved moment in the sun.

To their credit, Iron Man 2 was their first real attempt to build toward something, and it failed but they learned from their mistakes.

I still don't think Iron Man 2 is a failure. It's a fun movie and I don't mind the fact that it isn't standalone.

Yeah, not sure how it can be deemed a "failure." I think the same people that dislike Iron Man 3 also dislike IM2, but I'm in the exact opposite camp. The first one was an excellent surprise when it was released, but I enjoyed the sequels more.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy (Gunn, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

I don't think Iron Man 2 is a bad movie by any means, just not one on par with a lot of the other MCU movies, especially in retrospect. It's still enjoyable to me, and the only thing I really dislike about it is the goofy "element" discovery and not knowing what to do with Whiplash. There are some really fun parts, namely War Machine and Hammer.

Really enjoyed this tonight, as did my wife, my 2 kids and the in-laws. Very fun movie, humorous and not nearly as stupid as I had feared.

4.5/5
