Re: Comedy Sequels : Are They Doomed To Fail?

I think it's mostly because many successful comedy movies are more or less developed on set and practically ad-libbed by the cast in development. You know how most Hollywood movies have a screenplay already developed before filming? That's not always the case for comedy, including some of the best comedies of all time. Comedies are a product of the director and cast working together on set, which isn't very prevalent in other genres.

So no one knows going in if a comedy is really going to work, including the studio itself. You have to hit the same lightning twice, which is very difficult.

I still like the original better, but Bogus Journey is a worthy follow-up and definitely doesn't repeat the same beats as the original, as most comedy sequels tend to do.

I have appreciated it more as I've gotten older.

Excellent points about Bogus Journey.

The follow-up to a time travel movie does not even have any time travel in it... and it works wonderfully!

I'll give props to B&T for attempting something completely different and the concept as a whole works, but the execution fell short for me. Excellent Adventure all the way for me.

Oh, I think Excellent Adventure is the best of the three by a country mile, but I still hold that Bogus Journey is best directed, most polished and the most imaginative of the three films. It's not as funny as EA (but funnier than FTM) and *certainly* the least heartfelt of the three films.
