Maleficent Casts a Spell on Seth MacFarlane: Box Office 5/30-6/1

Per Boxoffice.com:

1 Maleficent $71,000,000 -- 3,948 -- $17,984 $71,000,000 1 Disney
2 X-Men: Days of Future Past $31,500,000 -65% 4,001 5 $7,873 $160,969,103 2 Fox
3 A Million Ways to Die in the West $16,200,000 -- 3,158 -- $5,130 $16,200,000 1 Universal
4 Godzilla (2014) $11,300,000 -63% 3,501 -451 $3,228 $173,731,557 3 Warner Bros.
5 Blended $8,000,000 -44% 3,555 0 $2,250 $29,206,536 2 Warner Bros.
6 Neighbors (2014) $7,500,000 -47% 2,939 -327 $2,552 $128,385,720 4 Universal
7 Million Dollar Arm $3,850,000 -45% 2,329 -690 $1,653 $28,246,609 3 Disney
8 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $3,800,000 -51% 2,152 -1008 $1,766 $192,757,297 5 Sony / Columbia
9 The Other Woman (2014) $1,400,000 -62% 1,114 -1040 $1,257 $81,087,148 6 Fox
So much for strong word of mouth for X-Men. That's a bigger drop than I was expecting considering strong reviews and I believe an A Cinemascore grade. Godzilla isn't settling in either, but should still cross $200 mil. Spider-man should also reach that total.

So much for Spider-Man 2 being a billion dollar movie. I can't believe Neighbors made as much as it did.

With the summer movie season in full swing I'm not surprised at all. No doubt next weekend, Edge of Tomorrow will kick out Maleficent and then no doubt How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be #1 the following weekend. Is asking a lot for X-Men to stay on top though I do wish the drop wasn't as high. But this is a family movie we are talking about and one that looks good so parents will be flocking to it with their kids.

Assuming this is even close to accurate I would like to see Neighbors and Blended switch though, Adam Sandler movies need to do poorer if we are going to get less of them...

Wow, I'm disappointed in such a large drop for X-Men given how good it was and all the positive word of mouth. I didn't think Maleficent would be that big either.

Damn, 65%?!

Then again, all the children who didn't see X-Men will be seeing Maleficent. It's sort of a crowded marketplace, too.

no WAY Maleficent makes 75 mil for the weekend. Unless they think theaters will be more packed today due to kids out of school

Family movies almost always have a Saturday bump.

X-men had a 65% drop Friday-to-Friday (discounting the $8.1m it made on Thursday), that isn't uncommonly high, by the end of the weekend I expect it to be closer to a 56% drop.

for the weekend you mean, NOT the end of the school year (which varies in and the DC metro area)

I give the cinemascore little to no credibility. Tyler Perry's last movie, (which didn't even make 20 million total) got an A score.

Even though she intends to only "direct" movies, I have a feeling this might keep Jolie around the acting realm for a while. She seems to be the only actress whose name alone can get a good opening number for a movie. Salt opened four years ago and did rather well itself if I recall.

Is Superhero-fatigue finally occuring?

OR are people just more invested & interested in what Marvel Studios puts out?

Yes and no. She can't open a movie with her name alone, but having her in an appealing movie will add a lot to its bottom line.

Can't be the latter, Captain America 2 dropped 57% in its second weekend.

I don't think I would jump to that conclusion yet. To be fair, the X-Men franchise has never been the monster hit that Iron Man or the Raimi Spider-Man movies were. Given a 14 year history for X-Men movies there just might be waning interest in the current property.

Just curious what Sony thinks about it's way too soon and unnecessary reboot of "Spider-Man". Since neither film has made anywhere close to the first three at the box-office worldwide. Not including inflation.

It would be funny if they gave it back to Raimi & the movies went on using the Raimi continuity and ignored the Amazing Spiderman films.

So, a smaller drop than Spider-Man and X-Men.

Yep, but not by too much. Though Captain Murrica had a stronger opening too. Shame too, X was much better.

Each had its unique strengths. Personally, I thought Cap was a little better.

I thought X was fantastic, better than Cap, but it doesn't appear to have legs, probably the combination of being a long in the tooth franchise and not being part of the currently hot Marvel Studios brand.

If that's so... Are we at a point where the audience knows this? That certain properties aren't by Marvel Studios?
