Nice. Yeah. Every word that man said? You paid attention and you tried to read his every action. And then when you find out what he is and what drives him? Makes him even better. Such a great character.

If Villeneuve truly is the man in charge of the new Blade Runner, my hopes just raised a whole level. While I don't know if it will fit, it would be awesome if they got Benicio to play someone who might be in the vain of Edward James Olmos' Gaff in the original. Possibly a protege or offspring.

He's got a great stateside trifecta going:

Prisoners
Enemy
Sicario

It just now occurred to me that there was some ironic dialogue in one scene

Spoiler:
Del Toro telling Blunt the allegory about the wolves. I didn't remember it at the time, but they were the two main leads in The Wolf Man. Probably just coincidence, as Wolf Man wasn't exactly a major hit.

Fuck. I forgot they were in that movie together. Flawed but I really enjoyed the director's/extended cut of that.

I'll have to check out the extended version one of these days. The version I saw theatrically was borderline incomprehensible, if my memory serves me.

Max Von Sydow makes a small appearance in the extended cut.

I didn't mind the Wolfman. Benicio was perfect for the role, but it looks like the behind the scenes took a lot away from what this movie could have been. I remember seeing some of the practical work they were doing and it looked incredible, only for them to then switch CGI, which looked pretty awful in the finished movie.

Yeah. That one had issues before production started. I also think some characterizations and plots tied to those characters could have been better. Hopkins was phoning it in too, that whole character could have worked but not the way it was scripted or played.

They should have let Baker's work was awesome but also somtimes hidden by elements that could have been done by him much better. Not to say he could have done it all in the speed the film presented it but some that CGI didn't really work well for it at times. And then.... the final battle. That one was all kinds of fucked up CGI.

Just saw this today. Thought it was very good, thoroughly watchable and engrossing. Oscar #2 for del Toro seems in play and maybe finally one for Roger Deakins.

Man the Border Crossing scene was intense and well shot. I was squirm in out of my seat.

I bought the EC when it went on special at Best Buy and am glad I did. It actually develops the characters and makes sense. Now a regular part of my Halloween viewing.

Back to this movie, it was good , but :

Spoiler:
I am kind of surprised the second in command of the cartel (the brother) stopped for a cop given his lifestyle. It's been said that most people, especially Americans, know better than to stop for a Mexican "police officer" on a lonely road.

I was a little surprised by that as well. I assume he expected it was going to be a quick payoff that he was willing to pay and quickly get going.

Well
Spoiler:
if the cop is part of that same fucked up corrupt system - the second in command would most likely be a boss or someone on the same team as the cop. Then again, if the second in command were to hit the gas the cop calls for back up or they just shoot the shit out of the guy on that road.

I'm amazed at how much there was of CGI here. Fincher level type of CGI subtlety here. Juarez looked legit.

That is pretty crazy. I kinda wish I didn't watch that. We really can't shoot aerial shots of cars anymore? Seems a bit lazy.

You can think of it like that but also think how small the production is, it doesn't look like it's a $30 million dollar film. Shit can get pretty tight when the scope they're going for is on budget like that. Especially w/ the limitations they may have had on what was allowed in the locations. Sure as hell didn't look it was film budgeted at that level.

Nor did I. It REALLY REALLY stretched that budget. Add in that Deakins can't make a crappy looking film even if he tried. Seriously... that man is owed an Oscar by now. Not that it matters cuz he's making the history books no matter what but still...

I guessed it was around $50-60 million just by looking at it and how big and detailed it looked at times. I guess it was a really precisely planned film.

Man that reel is remarkable. But people should NOT watch it until after they watch the movie.

From the subtle ones, the one I know for sure was CGI was the shot where they're passing the copters and the the big jet. The former looked soft enough w/ a sheen to it that it could tell but stuff like the bodies? Totally thought those were dummies.

How do you pronounce the title? Is it with a hard C?
