Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert

Roger Ebert was one of the main influences for my love of Film as art. I didn't even know about OAR till I read an article he wrote about it.

I'll definitely check this out. Was a big fan of the show with Gene Siskel and later with Richard Roeper. It's not a coincidence that no show has worked well enough to replace Siskel & Ebert.

Would love to know when this will be released, I would like to see it.

Sometimes I will pull up old Siskel and Ebert reviews to watch on youtube. There will never be another show like it that reviews movies ever again.

^Same here, and I'm not even a devotee, though I had watched S&E since about '88.

I love Gene just as much though. Somewhere along the line, Roger somehow doubled in popularity.

I've seen it and it's great. There's a big chunk of the film devoted to Gene, as well.

^Glad to hear it. He was as important to the show as Ebert.

Gene seemed to fall out of the limelight in the late 90's. What ever happened to that guy?

I credit this to his being an early adapter to the internet, a savvy that truly came in handy after he lost his ability to speak.

He died at age 53 in 1999.

US screenings start very-late June/early July in limited release and VOD; should also be on CNN (they're a producer) in the Fall.

Gene Siskel had a brain tumor and died in 1999...he worked almost up to the point of his death. Other than his wife, no one knew how ill he had gotten - not even Roger, which is touched upon in the new film - it's one of the reasons Roger went public with his cancer.

Life Itself Rated R for brief Sexual Images/Nudity and Language

The trailer shows some of the Siskel & Ebert outtakes where both make fun of each other (& swear) & i asusme footage from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is included

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert

Ebert's memoir Life Itself has some raunchy moments, including him losing his virginity to a hooker in South Africa and (my favorite) Ebert getting so many handjobs in high school his mom waves his semen encrusted jeans in his face and yells at him for "wasting a baby".

Opening this weekend. Sitting at 98% on RT (1 negative, and it's 2 1/2 out of 4 stars). No theaters around here are showing it, so I plan to buy it on Demand this weekend and watch with a bottle of wine and plenty of tissues. I can hardly make it thru the interviews that Steve and Chaz have been doing without welling up.

It opens at the Tivoli in Westport on July 11. I might just have to make the trip there to see it.

Can't embed, but you can watch the very first show of Siskel and Ebert back in 1975:

It's quite remarkable looking back at all the films Siskel and Ebert panned or simply had a ho hum reaction to. Like Cuckoo's Nest in that video. They saw it as a good, but disappointing film. I see it as a film in which I wouldn't put up much of an argument if someone were to call it the greatest American film ever made.

great, great documentary. I shed some tears. Loved the portrait it painted of the relationship with Gene Siskel. They both seemed like real great guys. Was really touched by some of the words and stories mentioned by Martin Scorsese and Werner Herzog and especially the young director who got the puzzle box passed down to him from a very impressive lineage. I was a little surprised that Richard Roeper wasn't interviewed or even mentioned in the film.

Hope this gets an Oscar nod.

4.5/5

Did they have some sort of a falling out when Ebert was still alive? This is very surprising to me.

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert

Loved it.

Fantastic movie. Sad and moving. I was also surprised that they didn't even interview Richard Roeper considering he had the tough task of replacing Gene after he died.

But, I know they couldn't cover everything otherwise it would be a 4 hour movie. I think they covered the most important parts...his beginnings as a writer, the awkward transition to TV, the rivalry and friendship with Gene Siskel, his marriage to Chaz and the cancer.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

Maybe Roeper asked for too much? I doubt it, but it's the only reason I can think of.
