Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Oprah isn't in the movie either, even though Ebert helped start her talk show career, was close friends with her, and even dated her at one point.
I think it was just an issue for time...the movie is more about Roger as a person than Roger as a professional, but obviously they had to include Gene because of the love/hate friendship the two men had. |
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Roeper isn't missed because he is an idiot with banal taste and almost no insight into film. Probably the only thing negative I could say about the great Roger Ebert is that after auditioning a lot of different critics and filmmakers to fill Siskel's chair, he chose a light weight entertainment reporter to fill the spot permanently. This always struck me as very self serving on Ebert's part. He and Siskel worked well together because they were equals. With Roeper it was so one sided. Ebert picked someone who would rarely disagree with him, and when they did disagree was such a light weight that his dissenting opinion meant nothing.
I also believe there was a squabble over the ownership of the "two thumbs" concept between Ebert, Siskel's estate, and the producers of the show. Roeper probably sided against Ebert in that negotiation. |
Can I have his job then :p? Who is Roeper's partner now anyway? Does he have one? I remember it was Ben and Ben for a while, is ATM even on anymore?
|
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Roeper doesn't have a partner, but he does video reviews on his website (and apparently also writes columns for the Sun-Times).
The show briefly came back in 2011, with Ebert and Chaz overseeing. Check out this article from Ignatiy Vishnevetsky (yeah I had to paste that) who was one of the critics, along with Christy Lemire. http://www.avclub.com/article/i-killed-movies-206668 |

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Finally got around to this today. As much as I loved it, I might've loved it even more if they included the Better Luck Tomorrow clip where Ebert went crazy defending Justin Lin.
I was also pleased to see that the Russ Meyer stuff was handled nicely  |

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Gonna try to catch this on the weekend.
|
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Roeper is a general columnist in the Sun-Times (for decades before the movie review stuff) and co-hosts an afternoon radio talk show that discusses current events and politics.
Movie reviews with Roger were a side gig. |
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
I'd never seen that clip of Roger above...it reminds me of what I loved about him.

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Heads up people.
Just announced on Roger's Facebook page. The movie will be shown this Sunday at 9et on CNN. Set your DVRs. If you don't have cable, then tough shit. One of the best movies from last year, absolutely 100% worth watching if you were a fan of Roger. |

 It's a great movie, but not everyone needs to own the disc and I can't see people wanting to watch this over and over. That's why I bumped this to give a headsup about the TV premiere. Also, the movie is rated R. There are several F Bombs dropped in some of the interview footage and some brief nudity from the footage of the 1970 movie Beyond the Valley of the Dolls which Roger co-wrote and was rated X. I wonder if CNN will make some minor edits to the documentary when it airs. |
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
DVR set. Thanks!
I've been looking forward to checking this out. |
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
DVR set. Do you think CNN will censor anything? Language, etc.

I don't remember much language in it, but I guess it is Rated R. I think one of the photos is of Gene Siskel in a hot tub with a topless girl (believe it or not!) - CNN might censor that. :)

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
There were a few behind the scenes clips IIRC where Gene dropped a few F bombs during the taping of At the Movies/Siskel and Ebert.
And as I said, there is a little nudity from the footage of Roger's movie that he co-wrote. Even if CNN censors some of those, it's not going to hurt the integrity of the film. |
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
saw this and loved it. won't hesitate to record and watch it again!

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
I'm surprised to hear Life Itself got an R-rating for a couple of cusses in an interview and some cheeky clips from a 40 year old movie. Given how much Roger used to rail against the "flywheels" at the MPAA, I wonder if this was their idea of a final "fuck you" to him.

DVR set!

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Will this make its way to netflix in the near future? I havent seen it yet, and that would be the easiest way to see it.

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Weirdly enough, teared up a bit towards the end of the documentary, but overall, a solid look at the life and times of Roger Ebert. Worth watching.
2 Thumbs Up! |
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Saw the cnn airing tonight. Decent doc. They could've delved into so much more stuff from his career. Kinda odd that Richard Roeper wasn't even mentioned, not even once, but then again I'm glad. He's a fucking assclown.
Edit: CNN edited the movie by 23 minutes to make way for commercials. And yet they played it twice consecutively from 9 pm - 1am. Fuck them. |

Just wonderful. I grew up watching At the Movies and Roger was my favorite film critic. This film reminds of just how much I miss his reviews.
|
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
So 23 minutes of footage was missing or left out completely?
Great documentary though I don't think they mentioned anything about Siskel and Ebert becoming syndicated and they were no longer on PBS with Michael Medved and Jeffery Lyons replacing them. |

Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Bump
For those who still haven't seen this yet, it was posted on Netflix today (the uncut R rated version) So if you didn't buy the BD, watch it on CNN, here's your chance to finally catch this. |
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Thanks for the heads up DJariya.
|
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
Watched last night. First hour was very dry. It picked up a bit with Siskel, but overall I thought it was pretty boring.
|
Re: Life Itself- Documentary On Roger Ebert
I miss Ebert on those Post Oscar (Evening at the Oscars?) shows where he would give his analysis on the winners and losers.
Now all they talk about is fashion |
