Bought this on Blu Ray today and absolutely loved it! It was at Target for $14.99 and I snapped it up. I was hesitant buying it as a blind buy but I really like JK Simmons and with him winning the Oscar and the reviews here I figured I couldn't go wrong. It was an amazing film and the performances were great. I will be watching this one again.

This movie was preposterous. It doesn't know it's a comedy. JK Simmons obviously deserved an award for his acting but my god, this flick was hilarious - so over the top and just plain ridiculous.

If I had a passion for drumming and people said I would never be good enough, that alone would be enough motiviation for me to work my ass off like no other. but no, here we see some mental-midget get his car flipped and he has such passion to become the best drummer the world has ever seen that he will still make the show with his head bashed open oozing guts and blood - fucking absurd.

re: Whiplash (2014, D: Damien Chazelle) - Miles Teller & J.K. Simmons

Drummer Josh Freese (he's drummed for everybody) posted this on his FB yesterday:

After being told forever that I need to see "Whiplash" because I'm a drummer and it's 'about a drummer!' and blah blah blah, I reluctantly gave it a shot on my 4 hour plane ride yesterday. I figured it was "now or never. I'm sitting on a flight, why not?"
I lasted just under 30 minutes and couldn't take it anymore. For me it was unrealistic and annoying and I came up with a good alternative....
1) If you want to watch some asshole drill sergeant berate and humiliate young people watch the first 30 minutes of "Full Metal Jacket." No one did it better than R. Lee Ermey.
2) If you want to know realistically what it's like to be a musician? Watch "Spinal Tap."

Yeah the car bit was cartoony... totally and completely unnecessary.

re: Whiplash (2014, D: Damien Chazelle) - Miles Teller & J.K. Simmons

I wasn't as hard on this movie as others were because - well, because it's a movie. But, yeah, it has a lot of cliches in it.

I did come away from the film liking JK Simmons' character a whole lot more than Miles Teller's. I was actually hoping he'd fail at the end, because he acted like such an ass throughout the movie. At least JK's character had a reason behind his madness.

Regardless, Simmons is great in this - that's the reason to see it.

I watched this on a flight to Boston and absolutely loved it. I didn't care how unlikeable the characters were, they were entertaining to watch, especially Simmons who absolutely deserved the Oscar. Just loved watching him go from calm to madness at ease was fantastic. Loved that he tried to fuck over Andrew at the end, and Andrew's response as well.

As someone catching up on the best picture noms, this one is leading the pack.

Saw it last night. Great Oscar worthy performance by JK Simmons. Some things were a bit too over the top that bordered on the ridiculous and others were so predictable. I used to be a drummer and I currently play bass so as a musician I was looking forward to it and was a bit disappointed.

2.5/5

Some of it was a little over the top, but I enjoyed this overall. I was pretty engrossed in the story and characters, and didn't feel that I knew where it was going. I really appreciated the fact that with JK Simmons' character they didn't really go down the route of..

Spoiler:

..."Oh, he may have been tough on them, but he really had a heart of gold and cared about his students, and just wanted to bring out their best."

No, he was just a complete fucking asshole who was good at his craft.

Re: Whiplash (2014, D: Damien Chazelle) - Miles Teller & J.K. Simmons

I finally caught this on Netflix tonight (it leaves April 30). I'd flipped it on as a background movie and it drew me in. I didn't get a thing done.

I'm a huge fan of Oz, so I knew the power of JK.

Realistic? I don't know. Real emotions? Yes.

I admit i have some mixed feelings on the very ending:
Spoiler:
I cant really say whether Andrew "succeeds" because when Fletcher smiles, he smiles back. This pursuit from approval from him to the bitter end may show they finally get each other or it may show that Andrew is still holding himself to Fletcher's standards instead of his own. I don't know. I have to chew on that for a while.

I don't know if I could stomach watching this on a regular basis, but I was impressed and glad I finally saw it.

Re: Whiplash (2014, D: Damien Chazelle) - Miles Teller & J.K. Simmons

For me Whiplash is one of the few movies for the ages, which has been released in the last 10 years. My wife has a very high standard for what she considers a good movie. Everything which doesn't blow you away like Fight Club or The Matrix is just OK for her. Then I decided to show her Whiplash and when she asked what it's about and I said "a jazz drummer" we weren't up to a good start.

Anyway she loves the movie and bought us tickets to a showing in a theater a couple of weeks ago. She loves the movie so much that she refuses to watch Birdman, because she can't believe any movie would win best picture over Whiplash.

I can't see anyone sabotaging his own high profile gig just to spite someone else. But I also always got that Andrew had his 'fuck you' moment at the end because he controlled his narrative, not Fletcher.
