I'm really hoping Fruitvale Station gets some love, but I doubt it.

Director is going to be the toughest category to predict. Like nine legit candidates for five spots as well as several dark horses

The fact that he's got DGA and BAFTA nominations tells me he's probably secured the 5th spot over Payne, Jonze and others. I think that certainly helps his chances at getting an Oscar nod. Cuaron, Greengrass, Russell, and McQueen seem to be safe. At this stage, I'd be stunned if Scorsese didn't get in.
Why is he a dark horse if he has 2 of the biggest directing nominations so far?

BTW nice avatar for a great movie.

I'm not going to subject myself to shit like Movie 43, Grown Ups 2, After Earth, etc just so I can say I've seen something worse.

Wolf of Wall Street has just jumped back in the race, landing Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. I'm very disappointed that Tom Hanks wasn't nominated for Captain Phillips.

Just noticed Wolf of Wall Street didn't earn an Editing nomination. That will hurt some. Lone Survivor also managed to get in both Sound categories.

Amy Adams always seems to get nominated in a year where the winner is basically been predetermined. Blanchett is probably a lock to win again.

American Hustle and Gravity each with 10 nominations. 12 Years a Slave received 9. Wolf of Wall Street and Her both received 5. Captain Phillips got 6 despite snubs for Hanks and Greengrass. Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska also got 6 apiece.

Seems like some really great choices this year. Movies like Her, Wolf of Wall Street, and Dallas Buyers Club got plenty of love, while sentimental Oscar bait like Saving Mr. Banks and The Butler were left out. I'll take Leo over Tom Hanks and Sally Hawkins over Oprah any day.

Based on the Editing category, looks like a 3-way race between American Hustle, Gravity, and 12 Years a Slave. I haven't seen 12 Years yet, but if either of the other 2 films win, I'd consider that an awful selection.
Nice to see Roger Deakins get in for Prisoners, even though he won't win again this year.

Re: The 86th Academy Awards — 2014 Nominations Discussion Thread
- Like last year with SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMERICAN HUSTLE gets nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and acting nominations in all four of the acting categories - Bale, Adams, Cooper, and Lawrence. I wonder if a director's movies have ever done that before in subsequent years? I'm guessing no.
- GRAVITY gets a cinematography nod, even though a huge chunk of that film was created on a computer...interesting.
- Tom Hanks and Robert Redford both snubbed, but there's no one on the current list I'm unhappy about. VERY happy to see Bale make it, I thought he gave the best performance in AMERICAN HUSTLE.
- Jonah Hill - TWO-time Academy Award nominee!
- THE LONE RANGER gets two nominations. Suck it, all you haters!
- THE BUTLER gets ZERO nominations - Thank God...I thought it was a horribly overrated movie.
