I think it is rather unfair that for every best picture nom, there should be the accompanying best director nom.

Ben Affleck would have been a lock if he had been nominated. Without a directing nomination, it makes it kinda hard for the DGA winner to take home the Oscar.

I don't recall this happening recently (if ever), the Academy has rescinded the nomination of Alone Yet Not Alone for Best Song.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — On Tuesday night, the Academy’s Board of Governors voted to rescind the Original Song nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” music by Bruce Broughton and lyric by Dennis Spiegel. The decision was prompted by the discovery that Broughton, a former Governor and current Music Branch executive committee member, had emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period.
“No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one’s position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one’s own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage,” said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy President.
The Board determined that Broughton’s actions were inconsistent with the Academy’s promotional regulations, which provide, among other terms, that “it is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner. If any campaign activity is determined by the Board of Governors to work in opposition to that goal, whether or not anticipated by these regulations, the Board of Governors may take any corrective actions or assess any penalties that in its discretion it deems necessary to protect the reputation and integrity of the awards process.”

There's been a lot of nasty speculation about Alone Yet Not Alone since the nominations were announced. If the producers are smart, they can turn this into a "Liberal Hollywood Attacking Christian Film" scandal. That will be a lot of fun!
I remember Nina Rota was nominated for Best Score for The Godfather and then had the nomination rescinded because he had recycled some music he wrote for an earlier Italian movie.
Then, when Godfather 2 came out, the rules changed and Carmine Coppola was nominated and won the Oscar for Best Score, even though the movie still contained a lot of Rota's earlier ineligiable music.

BTW : I read yesterday that if "Let It Go" from Frozen wins (which looks pretty likely unless they're just dying to give Bono an Oscar), then Robert Lopez will be an EGOT winner at the age of 38! He's already got Tonys for Avenue Q and Book of Mormon, a Grammy for the Book of Mormon soundtrack and an Emmy for his songs for the My Musical episode of Scrubs.

The trailer for Alone Yet Not Alone has to be seen to be believed.
Christian movies.
I believe that dipshit Kirk Cameron have another one of his simple minded badly acted movies coming out soon too.

So far I've seen Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, and Wolf of Wall Street. Out of those I think Gravity was the best but I'm looking forward to checking out the other nominees, especially Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey seems to be on a pretty hot streak right now and the story seems interesting. Living overseas has made it hard to see many new films, especially when all the theaters are dubbed instead subtitled.

The Hollywood Reporter discussed a few situations in the past. The most recent of which was the live action short Tuba Atlantic, which they said was on TV in Norway before the ceremony. My friends thought that was the best of the shorts that year but I vehemently disagreed.

The ACE awards were last night. Captain Phillips won in the Drama category over the heavy favorite Gravity. American Hustle won for Comedy/Musical.
This helps to keep the BP race up in the air.
Gravity has won: Globe for Directing, DGA, PGA
American Hustle has won: Globe for Best Picture, SAG, ACE
12 Years a Slave has won: Globe for Best Picture, PGA
It probably has no shot at BP, but Captain Phillips has managed 2 major Guild awards, the ACE and WGA.
12 Years a Slave wasn't eligible for the WGA, but it's the favorite for Adapted Screenplay. I'm still thinking it's a split year, with Gravity winning Director, and 12 Years taking Picture. Gravity lacks a Screenplay nomination and losing the ACE definitely cools its momentum.
If 12 Years does win Picture, what else can it realistically win? Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress are near locks. That gives it 3. It would be great if it's another Braveheart night and McQueen upsets the DGA winner. I could see that happening.
I think American Hustle is out due to losses at the PGA, DGA, and WGA.

Gravity was favored for editing? Hadn't heard that anywhere, weird.

If Gravity or 12YAS clean up at Bafta I would go ahead and paint that film as the favorite. If they both do good at Bafta then it probably remains at a toss up at The Oscars.

Animated will most likely go to Get a Horse. I plan on seeing the shorts (but not documentary yet) this coming weekend so maybe I'll be more informed by then.

Thank God it's her instead of Demi Lovato.
