A Most Wanted Man (2014, Corbijn) S: Hoffman, McAdams, Wright, Dafoe, Bruhl

When a half-Chechen, half-Russian, tortured half-to-death immigrant turns up in Hamburg's Islamic community, laying claim to his father's ill gotten fortune, both German and US security agencies take a close interest: as the clock ticks down and the stakes rise, the race is on to establish this most wanted man's true identity - oppressed victim or destruction-bent extremist?

Looks great. I loved The American and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - this should rank up there quite nicely, IMO.

Great piece. The comments section is very good, too. Thanks for sharing.

Posthumous AA.

They've been talking about this quite a bit lately on NPR. Not even seeing the images, just hearing his line delivery, sounds like a great performance. It also sounds like it's in the mold of Spy Who Came In From The Cold which is a HUGE plus for me.

Saw it tonight. Overall, I think it's good. I was a big fan of Tinker Tailor, and I loved Corbijn's first two films, so I had high hopes. It's engaging, has some good performances, a relatively straightforward story (which I found refreshing), and looks solid.

About halfway through the film though, I realized - there's no magic happening on the screen. It's a little too restrained for its own good. There were moments in Tinker Tailor, where - even when I felt lost in terms of where I was in the story - I was still utterly engrossed in what I was watching. Watching this, it was sort of the opposite. The story is laid out very clearly, but there aren't a lot of "wow" moments. It held my attention, but the movie never rises above that level of engagement.

It's worth seeing, and I'm curious to hear other people's reactions. But it's not something I'll revisit.

A fantastic film and a worthy one of PSH's final performance.

This perfectly summarizes my thoughts on this. I saw it today. PSH was fantastic, dare I say perfect, and I'm not saying that because he's dead.

Watched it this morning, good film. As a native German speaker, I was impressed with Hoffman's accent. McAdams and Dafoe were pretty good too.

It isn't an exciting story by any means, but Corbijn's direction and the performances lift the movie. It has some tense moments.

I also really dug the cinematography of this one. Whomever is Corbijn's DOP is a talented person. All of Corbijn's films have looked great.

Just finished watching it. Very good film with an excellent performance by the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman.

This is one of those movies I respected more than I liked. Some great acting, but the film itself is a bit dull.

I thought it was a good slow burn spy thriller. The atmosphere reminded of those cold war films of the 60's like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and The Manchurian Candidate. So far Anton Corbijn has yet to make a dud, he's a solid director.
