World War Z Part 2 - S: Pitt [UPDATE: CANCELLED]
“The Impossible” director J.A. Bayona is set to direct a sequel to “World War Z” for Paramount and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
Marc Forster directed the first film, which managed to survive bad pre-release buzz stemming from costly reshoots en route to grossing $540 million worldwide.
Pitt starred as a United Nations staffer tasked with stopping a zombie plague. The film was based on the novel by Max Brooks, though the storyline was significantly different from the source material.
Plan B has yet to hire writers for the sequel, though Bayona is expected to oversee the writing process.
Bayona previously directed the refreshing genre picture “The Orphanage.” He’s represented by CAA.

I'm down for Bayona.
Hopefully this film's production won't be a cluster fuck like the last one.
Maybe they could even use plot elements from the book this time. Just sayin'...

Hopefully he brings more of a horror element to a sequel. FWIW, I disliked the first film but not enough to casually dismiss a sequel.

The atmosphere Bayona created for The Orphanage made it feel like a horror movie without being overly bloody or gory. I think he'll be a good fit for an atmospherically creepy "action film" the studio may be going for.

Bayon's The Orphanage was interesting, this could be too. I have the book sitting by my bedside, i have to read it one of these days.

Great choice in Bayona - this material should be right up his alley and he can really sell the scale of it (as seen in his work with The Impossible) while not overwhelming the human element. Marc Forster is a hack so this is a huge upgrade IMO. Looking forward to it.

The Impossible had some very striking visuals and was a seriously awesome movie. Hope is high. Curious what direction they will take with part 2.

is it unreasonable to hope this picks up with the original ending of World War Z? I think that would be a great start to this flick.

Brad Pitt's ‘World War Z’ Sequel to Be Written by ‘Locke’ Director Steven Knight
Movies | By Jeff Sneider on May 28, 2014 @ 3:17 pm
Fresh off strong reviews for his experimental drama “Locke,” Steven Knight has been set to write the “World War Z” sequel for Paramount and Brad Pitt's company Plan B, an individual familiar with the zombie project told TheWrap.
Paramount had no comment.
Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Orphanage”) is directing the “World War Z” sequel, which will find Brad Pitt reprising his role as former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane.
Directed by Marc Forster and based on the popular book by Max Brooks, “World War Z” overcame negative pre-release buzz to gross $540 million worldwide thanks to mostly positive reviews.
“World War Z” was the highest-grossing film of Pitt's career, and the actor will produce the sequel with his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.
The “World War Z” sequel is still several years off, as Bayona plans to direct “A Monster Calls” for Focus first.
Knight, who previously wrote “Eastern Promises,” earned an Oscar nomination for writing “Dirty Pretty Things.” His upcoming films include DreamWorks’ “The Hundred Foot Journey,” Ed Zwick's Bobby Fischer movie “Pawn Sacrifice” and Legendary's “Seventh Son,” while John Wells plans to direct his script “Chef.”
Knight is a nice get for Paramount and Pitt, who is already working with the writer on a WWII romantic thriller that is in development at Graham King's GK Films.
“Locke,” which finds Tom Hardy giving a tour-de-force performance in a car, is one of the best reviewed films of the year, boasting an 88% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Knight is represented by CAA and United Agents.

Maybe Part 2 will tell us who Brad Pitt's character and his family are, what they do for a living, etc.
Honestly, I don't recall a recent big film with so little characterization.

So the Director of The Orphanage and the writer of Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises?
If it weren't for Zombies and Brad Pitt that would be an awesome combo, add Zombies and Brad Pitt and I want to see where the hell that can go.

Any greatness they achieve will be fixed with re-shoots at the end of production.

Secretly? Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland, Stranger Than Fiction, and the Kite Runner were all very well received movies, and I liked Quantum of Solace more than most.
